I guess Roy said that it might have been medicine he was taking or an over the counter supplement called ripple fuel. I don't know...Thats just what I've read.

Jones was never a technique fighter, he always used his speed and reflexes to dmoinate. As age and deterioration progresses, a fighter who has never relied on technique will dramatically decline in skill due to having nothing to fall back on. I mean guys like Hopkins who are 42 can continue to be successful because of their technique and the lack of such in the younger fighters. There is definately a possibility that steroids can damage tendons and relexes, but thats with prolonged use, and with how long Roy was on top and how many times he had to be tested to fight for titles levaes me to be a bit skeptical of prolonged use. So I went with father time resulting in his decline.

              You are right, however...

After Roy Jones, JR. defeated Richard Hall in 2000, both he and Hall tested positive for the androstenedione, (Andro to you and me, the same stuff McGwire admitted to taking) a substance banned by the IBF. Jones admitted taking a product named “Ripped Fuel” which contained androstenedione, a natural hormone which was available over the counter until 2004 when it was made illegal by the FDA.

So while not part of the BALCO scandal he did take a supplement that is now banned by almost every major sports health organization in the world.

I don’t bring this up to condemn the man or judge him in any way. There is no one on this planet that is perfect. We all, including myself, make mistakes. Even more, although the substance was banned by the IBF few people knew its negative effects were very much like those of steroids. Jones may have not even knowingly believed he was doing anything wrong. Finally, neither I nor anyone else can say what effect, if any, it had on Jones’s decline.

I only bring this up for any young boxer out there who thinks illegal supplements and/or steroids is the instant path to success. Aside from the fact if your caught your name will be soiled forever both are associated with serious health risks that at worse, can shorten your life significantly. Besides, boxing is about two gladiators going toe to toe and putting everything they got on the line. Warriors like this don’t need artificial chemicals, they stand up on their own merits.

I think the reason roy was roiding was because of father time. I think he just used roids to delay the inevitable.
