    John Scully HBO

I watched Ray Mercer vs Lennox Lewis (1996 MSG) last night - John Scully was color commentator.

Thought he was brilliant, would love to hear more of him (great fight also).

Much prefer him over a Kellerman.

Iceman - send them your CV.

    best,

    drh

.....I talked about this exact same subject in regards to the exact same fight a while back on here. I have no clue why he doesn't have a gig with HBO. I know he's busy but surely he could find time to become a household name.

Yeah, that was an ESPN Classics fight with Joe Tessitore, where they pretend to be commentating a live fight. Ice was great, Joe had his usual exagerrated theatrics.

I've seen his commentator work and he speaks well and is understandable.
More then anything I think he has a better understanding of what the fans want to see and hear because of his good personality and time spent here and on other sites.
          You have my vote .

its easy to be commentator when you already know what happened in the fight cause it was fought ten years ago sorry ice!

I don't know if it was that way or not but
The HBO crew is not the only one that does commentary for the fights.
They have a contract to be the only one that shows it live but they're not the only commentators.

they should pair him up with Yoel Judah, that should be a ppv on its own.

No, it's definitely that way. ESPN Classic edits the old fights so that it's either Tessitore and Scully or Tessitore and Ray Mancini doing the call. To my knowledge, Joe Tessitore wasn't announcing for any major network at the time of any of these fights. Therefore, it is in fact a case where they're calling fights that they already have advanced knowledge of what will happen.

I think Scully does a solid job as well, but would like to hear him do a live fight. I think he'll be fine there as well, but until then, he can only get credit for doing a solid job on re-broadcasts.

Oh okay I only remember a Lewis fight I thought it might have also sky ect broadcasts.
Even still he obviously has the personality speaking ability and knowledge to make a clean transition.
It's not like he's going to take Lamp's job and be the play-by-play /round by round guy.
