Pongsaklek wants Vic
By Kittipong Thongsombat
Pongsaklek Wongjongkam is aiming for a world flyweight unification with IBF champion Vic Darchinyan before he retires. WBC champion Pongsaklek, who has defended his belt 17 times, wants to take on Australian Darchinyan to prove who is the best in their weight category.
''Before retirement, I want to fight in the U.S. and take on Darchinyan, who is undefeated'' said Pongsaklek on Friday when he launched his book 'Kam Pan Sa Than Pob' (The boxer who is recognized worldwide).
The 30-year-old champion however admitted that the bout is unlikely to happen because of business reasons.
''I cannot choose my opponents because boxing is also a business,'' he said.
''As a fighter, I want to box abroad especially in the USA''
Darchinyan once claimed that Pongsaklek is not the real champion because the Thai has not fought in the USA since taking the WBC belt from Malcolm Tunaco of the Philippines in 2001.
Darchinyan has won all 28 of his fights, with 22 coming by knockout, and last retained his title in March when he knocked out Mexican Victor Burgos in the 12th round in California.
Pongsaklek's promoter Virat Wachiraratanawong said he always wanted to take his number one boxer to fight outside Thailand. However, he said the offers were not good enough.
''As a promoter, I prefer to have a fight abroad if it can earn more money but many offers are not interesting,'' said Virat.
Pongsaklek (65-2, 34KOs) is now preparing for his 18th defence against Daisuke Naito of Japan on July 18 in Tokyo.
He has already stopped Naito twice.
