What do you think of Alexander Povetkin?

Alexander Povetkin is fighting this weekend. What do you all think if this guy? Will he be the one to rule the heavyweight division and unify the belts?

Almost all his fights are on YouTube - he's very aggressive and hits very hard. He's fought better opponents so far than other prospects.

he looks ok, but i am not convinced about him yet, he doesn't have that tyson like invincibility when he was a young prospect.

The one with the Tyson like invincibility is Denis Boytsov, who may be even better than Povetkin, but he's six years younger and 3 or 4 years away from a title shot. Povetkin will be ready to fight for a title in 2008.

Povetkin was almost invincible in the amateurs, winning 11 Gold and 1 Silver medal in the 12 international tournaments in which he fought, including Gold at the 2004 Olympics.

My one concern about Povetkin is his age - Tyson was already undisputed champion in his early 20's - while Povetkin is already 27. However, Sasha seems much more intelligent than Tyson, so he'll not be doing dumb stuff like biting off ears, raping women and being caught with illegal drugs. If he ever becomes undisputed champion, he'll be a better role model for kids.

I like pvetkin. I think he is a future champ but only if he's moved a bit more slowly. I think he's still too green to be pushed into an immediate title fight against any of the champs. he needs to tighten up his defense and learn to set a 10 and 12 round pace better. it would be much too dangerous to throw him in right away with even an ibragimov or chageav. put him in with a few more top 20ish type guys and then go from there

I like this fighter a lot. He is very aggressive and has skills beyond just having KO power. But I also agree with beez721 in that I would like to see him in with a couple of top 20 ranked boxers before he tries for a title.

I think it's too early to be asking these questions; we just haven't seen enough of Povetkin against decent opponents to make an informed judgement here.

And let me be the first one to say this about his victory over Donald,...he beat an aging veteran who had suffered a long layoff and was very 'rusty' for this fight. Basically, I'm impressed with the win but not that impressed....

Povetkin got from the fight what he needed at this stage in his career, an opponent with a good enough chin to go the distance with him and put up a decent fight. His other recent opponents, Bostice and Heureux, couldn't get past two rounds with Sasha.
