    Kessler Closer to Calzaghe?
The situation can well be described as a wait and see situation after Mogens Palle met for a three hour long negotiation meeting with Joe Calzaghes promoter, Frank Warren last Thursday.

Along with his American attorney, Mike Marley, Mogens Palle first off had to realize, that Frank Warren initially tried to get away from the negotiation suggestion, which Warren had put in his Sunday column “Frankly speaking” in News of the World on April 22., as well as in a fax sent to Mogens Palle.
”There Warrens offer was five million dollars, but when we sat down in London his offer had al of the sudden declined to three million plus a share of the entrance fixed on a lower maximum.

I of course explained, that I had no intentions on wasting a couple of my dwindling years afterwards controlling his shows economics, and that Mikkel, Bettina and I would demand a fully transparent “clean deal” in order to come to England and face Joe Calzaghe.

Furthermore we also had to accept, that the World Championship bout, most likely on September 22., should be fought in the middle of the night at 03 in the morning en Denmark out of consideration of HBO’s American primetime, so that we would risk losing out of considerable gate and TV receipts.” Says Mogens Palle.

After a concluding lunch in London, Mogens Palle was forced to tell Frank Warren, that he at the moment thought the two parties too far apart to meet, and that he and Mikkel Kessler would go on to negotiate about the official title defence against Anthony Mundine as the WBA demanded in April.

However less that 24 hours later the situation concerning an upcoming Calzaghe-Kessler unification title match seems to be back on as American promoter Lou DiBella – before his boxer Jermain Taylor got in the ring with Cory Spinks son Saturday – announced, that he had thrashed the talks with Warren about a fall title match between Taylor and Calzaghe.

With Jermain Taylor’s disappointing effort and very small victory and Kelly Pavliks KO victory over Edison Miranda on the same bill in Memphis, it already looks like a fact, that HBO will be demanding that Taylor enters the ring with Pavlik in his next match.

That means that out of HBO’s suggested and accepted opponents, only the Danish WBA and WBC champion Mikkel Kessler is left for Frank Warren to pay attention to. That is if he wants Joe Calzaghes next title defence, probably Saturday the 22nd of September, in M.E.N Arena, Manchester sold and USA exposure.

”It is Frank Warren, and him alone that can decide if the boxing society will get to experience the undoubtedly most interesting match in SMW between Mikkel Kessler and Joe Calzaghe.

Mikkel, Bettina and I have yet again without a doubt demonstrated our willingness to come to England. It is now in the hands of Frank Warren to explain to the wondering boxing world, why Joe Calzaghe might choose to dodge Mikkel Kessler again.”

Calzaghe - Manfredo was at 3am as well was it? Of course not.

HBO would do what they did for that. Screen it live at 5pm their time and then later on "as live".

Christ, $3m plus gate is a bloody good offer for a top 10 P4P fighter let alone a contender with no real resume.

I quite like the 5pm time for European-staged fights. There's no need for these guys to fight at 3am so I can watch at the normal time.

I'm sorry, but Calzaghe would still quite easily get a 30,000 crowd even at 3am. Palle turning down $3m with a share of that gate suggests to me that he doesnt much want this fight and if he does, he wants fairly unreasonable terms. Cant complain about the time as its not going to be much different for Calzaghe in terms of his body-clock and it'll help increase both of their marketability in America.

It looks like they want to fight the rugby player again. Now there's a legacy fight right there.

Without Amir Khan on the undercard and a 15-fight undercard he wouldn't get 10,000 at any time of the day.

It's funny when you think for 5-10 years he failed to sell-out the 5,000-seat Cardiff International Arena once.

The whole point is that there obviously will be a decent undercard, perhaps with Khan again. Certainly with Froch already confirmed.

The fight will sell. Calzaghe is finally starting to see the need for publicity, he's even on the Paul O'Grady show tonight, was mentioned on the 'Greatest Living Britons' programme last night. He is starting to realise what you need to do to get the money.
