    HBO Broadcasters

I am sick and tired of this trio of Merchant, Lampley, and Lennox Lewis.

Lewis barely contributes anything. I know that he is an intelligent guy and was a great fighter, but as a broadcaster he is absolutely terrible. He doesn't make any insightful commentary. Did anyone else notice that Lampley keeps having to make suggestions to Lennox Lewis to get him to agree with them so he doesn't just stand there saying nothing for the whole fight? Lewis clearly is not comfortable in his role and it shows.

Merchant quite frankly complains too much. We all knew that Taylor versus Spinks was not going to be a brawl. Everybody knew this. Merchant spent the whole damn fight just complaining about it. The whole point of a broadcast trio is to provide some insight into the suttle technical things that are going on in the ring in this type of boxing match in order to make the fight more interesting to the casual fan who perhaps does not understand these things. The whole fight had Merchant complaining about how the fight was turning out as expected, Lampley saying things but being largely non-responsive in terms of having an opinion, and Lewis standing there like a turnip.

If HBOs broadcasters were just going to complain about the fight constantly, why did they have Cory Spinks on in the first place? What the hell did they expect him to do? Brawl? There have been many great defensive fighters like Willie Pep and Pernell Whitaker who were not necessarily considered boring. Why would HBO have a guy on the card and then constantly complain about him when he is boxing like he always does and boxing to his strengths which unfortunately doesn't lead to huge exchanges with lots of punches landed.

It is fights like Taylor-Spinks where we need an insightful broadcast trio to help casual fans through it by going in depth to the different tactics and strategies of both fighters. They were only alive and commenting when the Miranda-Pavlik fight was going on. We don't need them during a fight like that, because anyone can get excited watching that type of fight.

I like Mr. Merchant tremendously, but I agree - it's too much, too often.

He's actually schooling the public; who doesn't know as much as we do - but his attitude belies the reality of what the talent pool in Boxing has to offer.

Sure, we could make it all better by matching everyone up perfectly, and going back to smaller gloves and all - but that wouldn't change THAT much.

Larry Merchant is seething over, and has been for some time..

I thought he was going to poke Taylor in the eye at one point during post..

    He is an angry dude.

I agree and I know Spinks didnt put on a great show but I thought it was so ****** of Merchant to say that if Spinks is going to fight that way then he needs to find a new occupation. What? Is this the same Spinks that is a World Champ and has beaten some big name fighters? That was so ****** of him to say that, like this guy is a bum who has never done anything and doesnt know how to fight

Good post! HBO Broadcasters hurt boxing, their all are just like your normal casual fans.

I'm not saying that Taylor/Spinks was a good fight, but this is boxing not all fights can be brawls, styles make fights.

I was surprised how bad they talked about the fight. It was the worst ive ever heard them complain. I mean It really reflects bad on HBO. What if that was the frist time you seen boxing on HBO? Spinks should have stayed at 154 anyways.

Merchant is starting to get really old & crabby. If you dont brawl like Pac then he will rip you. If your any kind of boxer then he will dog you the whole fight

I havent seen the Taylor Spinks fight yet, but Lennox Lewis is alright imo, the one to watch these days is Emmanuel Steward, possibly the most biased of them all, a complete mayweather hater if ever there was one, so far in his time at HBO he has done the following.

                  - Declared that after mayweather shut out baldomir that he was basically overhyped.

-Told the world Mayweather De La Hoya wouldnt happen because mayweather was cack in the baldomir fight.

-Was the only person in the world who thought barrera's knockdown of Marquez in their fight was a 'slip'

-Apparently his analysis of De La Hoya mayweather was garbage also.

obviously that ****** hat he wears is cutting off the circulation to his brain, he loves to criticize fighters, but he claimed Lennox Lewis would have beaten Cassius Clay is they ever got in the ring.

                  lol.

The is no shame or wrong in telling what is shown.

I like mr "grumpy" Merchant, even if he is (sometimes) (very) wrong, normally he gets the discussion going. Sadly all could do nothing, but to agree with him in this taylor fight.
(tumbs up for they all stayed awake)

And yes, "I agree" , Lewis should "definetely" go.

Also HBO did not pick this fight, if I have it correct they only have the rights for the Taylor fights.
