Most Tough Fighters Grew up in POOR areas or in Broken Homes?

Gatti grew up tough he hung with tough crowd and boxed early, micky ward grew up in a working class area in boston, oscar de la hoya is from East los angeles, floyd jr from grand rapids, roberto duran from the impovershed area of panama, manny pacquiao from the very poor rough and tough area in gensan PI,jermain taylor messed up situation uncle killed his grandma and he grew up in a gang infested area, winky wright, jeff lacy, mike tyson, chris eubank, diego corrales,etc....

but then you got few the exceptions like joe calzaghe but he grew up with the gloves.

I think you'll find that most fighters come from the lower side of the socioeconomic ladder. Fighting is not a sport of choice for most parents with good education and good jobs to put there children.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen but it will be much less frequent than in poorer neighborhoods and to poorer families. The US is a perfect example of this.

Early part of 20th century boxing has followed the immigration pattern of America. The newest immigrants are predominantly on the lower socio-economic scale in America and they also become the new influx of boxers.

This is illustrated by the large presence of ***ish, Irish and Italian fighters. Blacks are also included but not due to immigration but racial and social oppression in the US has kept them on that lower end of the ladder.

Chris Eubank used this argument to discourage his son from taking up boxing. He said, "Boxing is a hungry man's sport." Middle class and upper class boxers rarely ever has success in it.

You dont gotta be from a ****** or poor to be hungry for success in boxing. It just helps that if you are poor you need boxing and have nothing better to fall back on, which makes you want it more then that guy who can fall back on being a teacher or some ****.

Other than being poor an important factor is also culture. Mexico and Puerto Rico have long embraced boxing and have both had huge boxing cultures.

Puerto Rico is relatively well to do island as compared to its caribean neighbors. Puerto Rico is similar to Southern Florida in many respects, with good parts and bad parts but overall a higher quality of life than in, D.R., Cuba, Haiti, Jamica.

Boxing however is interwoven into its culture. Its the only part of the US where boxing is considered a Major sport and where boxing regularly is front page news. This has kept Puerto Rico's presence in boxing being so disproportionit to its size.
