Round by Round Coverage: Taylor vs. Spinks

By Rick Reeno - Later tonight, a middleweight invasion takes place in Memphis. In the main event, undefeated WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (26-0-1, 17 KOs) defends his titles against current IBF junior middleweight champion Cory Spinks (36-3, 11KOs).

Taylor makes the fourth defense of his title with a September bout with WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe around the corner. Spinks is a heavy underdog in the fight, and takes the place of Contender star Sergio Mora, who pulled out over the venue location.

Taylor holds the advantage in size, strength, chin and experience. Spinks has more fights in the bank, but Taylor has fought the better level of competition. The only two factors that may possibly keep Spinks in the fight are speed and defense.

While Taylor has a fight with Calzaghe riding on the outcome, Spinks could land a potential date with Floyd Mayweather, Jr. if he somehow pulls off an upset.

The co-feature has more buzz than the actual main event. Edison Miranda (28-1, 24 KOs) collides with Kelly Pavlik (30-0, 27 KOs) in a battle of young, up and coming middleweight power punchers. Two of the most promising fighters at any weight, go head to head with a mandatory title shot against Jermain Taylor hanging in the balance. Expect plenty of fireworks. Don't expect the fight to go the distance. [details]
