While I am not overly excited about Povetkin (he needs some major work in defense department), I think he is fighting an incredible level of opposition, considering he only had 12 fights so far. I think Povetkin takes the fight, if Valuev could do it, so can Povetkin.Comment

Since Povetkin's fights don't usually last very long, he has to fight more frequently to gain experience in the ring. His last fight ended in the second round, the one before ended in round 3. As well, he should have a certain number of professional fights behind him before challenging for a title.
It's great that he's fighting frequently, I wish some other boxers wouldn't wait so long between fights. Barrett is the ideal test for Povetkin at this time. Monte's a former contender and a genuinely tough journeyman who's been in the ring with some of the best heavyweights of the past decade.Comment

Voted for Povetkin by decision, but realistically this could go either way.
In Povetkin's last fight his speed & power were on display, but also looked pretty raw in places.
Big risk for Povetkin with the limited experience he's had, but think he'll pull through after some shaky moments, possibly by KO.
PS. if you want to create real world-beaters in the heavyweight division the Americans should be paying attention to what the Russians & former soviet block states are doing.
The level of competition the likes of Chagaev, Vichis & Povetkin in the their first 20 or so fights so far outstrips the US fighters it's ridiculous.
They might not pass all the tests & they'll have some tough, close fights, but by the time they get to top they'll be ready for anything.Comment

Good post. Fighting weak opposition isn't helping the development of over-protected US boxers such as JD Chapman, Malik Scott and Chazz Witherspoon. Some such as Ty Fields reach their 30's having rarely or never faced tough opponents. If you want to create real world-beaters in the heavyweight division the Americans should be paying attention to what the Russians & former soviet block states are doing.
