Darchinyan to go for Donaire sweep
By Mario Ortega Jr.
Vic Darchinyan has a July 7th Showtime date set, tenatively in Las Vegas. 15rounds.com has learned that the challenger will be Nonito Donaire Jr., 16-1 (9KO's) of San Leandro, CA by way of General Santos City, Phillipines. According to Donaire himself, the contracts have been faxed, and are just awaiting his signature. Donaire has a bout set for this Saturday, which will still take place, against Kevin Hudgins at the Reno Events Center in Reno,
NV.
Obviously it is imparitive that Donaire come out of this bout without any cuts or other injures. Donaire was expecting to take on WBC Super Flyweight titlist Cristian Mijares on the undercard of a Darchinyan bout. Unexpectedly, Donaire was offered a title bout against Darchinyan instead, for the IBF & IBO Flyweight titles. Donaire will be attempted to avenge a technical decision loss by his older brother Glenn on October 10, 2006. Donaire has not fought below the flyweight limit since 2002. Mijares is still expected to appear on the undercard, possibly to set up a future showdown against Darchinyan. Donaire hopes to spoil their plans the first weekend of July on Showtime.
