'Boxing is dying...'

The equilibrium will return, I have no doubt about that. It is a just a natural fact, the Darwinian Theory of sport. Boxing is the only combat sport that features periods of actual beauty. You know what i'm talking about. The day I truly became a boxing fan was when I saw a clip of Ali slipping Terrel's shots by milimetres. Now you see Floyd lying on the ropes shifting his body and deflecting punches as Superman would bullets. No other sport can claim to be the 'sweet science.' Boxing is beautiful. UFC is not. The equilibrium will return.Comment

If only we had fighterslike Mike Tyson around now, boxing would be safe. Of course when Tyson was doing his thing boxing needed the big names of the 70s to save it. Back in the 70s fighters like Ray Robinson were sorely missed. And when Ray Robinson was around boxing needed Joe Louis. In Joe Louis' day boxing was dying not like when we had Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey, but when Dempsey was starting out everyone was concerned with Jim L Sullivan... Boxing has been dying for a hundred years yet it's still here...Comment

I hear you Bros! Long live Boxing! alot of folks are taking the liking of UFC because they go all out. Now a days, prize fighting is all about the money. guys like SRL, Duran, Hagler, Tyson, Chavez, Trinidad...they got in the ring to challenge thier skills. While being elusive, defensive ala Winky, Floyd, is indeed impressive, they make for lacklust "FIGHTS", not saying boring, but unintertaining. But with guys like Cotto, Guzman, Pacman, Miranda, Klitshko...who are willing to mix it up....Boxing will NEVER go away.Comment

Big names are what the MEDIA want you to know about...people know about big fights and know about boxing because of the Big names... there was and are entertaining fighters that people dont even know about... Aaron Pryor (The Past Overlooked King), Emmanuel Augustus (Not great but entertaining), Jason Litzau, and Miguel Cotto... ask a regular shmoe, but they wont know... boxing is never dead... its just its publicist just sucks...Comment

The DLH MAYWEATHER fight didn't help boxing gain a wider audience, most people felt ripped off after the fight, saying it was a joke. If the fight had have been exciting and everything we all love to see in a good fight, If think the sport could have picked up a few extra fans but instead it people felt robbed. Thanks Oscar, "I'm doing this for boxing". Imagine if everyone who watched last weeks fight watch Barrera - Morales instead. They main stream would be back for more.
But the sport will never die, there's too many die hards like us. But, we need a new star, Oscar is old and never lives up to his hype. As much as I hate the NAZ's of this world, the fight game needs them.

How is it dying? Sure it's not popular like in the 90's when you had big names like Tyson, DLH, James Toney, RJJ, Chavez, Holyfield, etc, but it's not dying. Their is millions of fight fans out there, their just not casual fans anymore.
Compared to 2000 era when the biggest names are Pacquiao and Mayweather.Last edited by Boxingwizard; 05-11-2007, 08:45 AM.Comment
