Top 5 reasons why DLH-PBF did well

Here is my top 5 reasons with explainations why Mayweather-De La Hoya did so well. This is listed in Greatest to Least impact, 1 being the greatest.

    1. Marketing & Timing

This was a very good time to advertize a fight. Casual boxing fans and just plain party people havn't seen a PPV boxing fight since Lewis-Tyson and probably even older than that. Because the fight was marketed so well, everyone knew there was a fight that weekend and they decided to tune in to see what the hype was all about. I think if you were to market as well as they did with something like Vitali and Wlad that night and you would have seen sorta the same numbers. Another reason why the two 6'7 giants should just get over their buddy-buddy thing and get in a ring and make some good money.

    2. Perfect date

It was the weekend of partying with the Derby and Spiderman. The Kentucky Derby probably did a lot of help as people went home to their derby parties and bought the fight for 5 bucks a person. Once again, GREAT marketing. Random people that said they haven't watched boxing is 20 years were asking me if I was ordering the fight. This reason matches real close with the #1 reason. They almost go hand in hand but both deserve seperate comments.

    3. De La Hoya's populatiry

As we all know, De La Hoya puts asses in seats and this is still a big reason why this fight was as big as it was. He draws in the crowds and interest thus people watched his fight. He has surpassed Tyson is PPV total figures and this just strengthens the point that everyone just wants to see De La Hoya. Put Oscar and Mike Tyson in a PPV masturbating match in the MGM grand and you will see 4.4 million.

    4. High KO perception

Lots of people thought they were going to see a brutal knock out that night. HBO polls has 35% of people thought that DLH was going to knock Mayweather out. This makes for great marketing by word of mouth because knockouts make people's ears perk up.

    5. Good vs Evil

I believe this is an oldie but goodie. This trick still works well to the normal person. People go and pay for movies all the time to get the good vs evil fix they need. Thus this tactic still works as proved in the Mayorga vs De La Hoya fight. The very last reason why I thought this fight did well and I finally mention something that Mayweather contributed for this fight.

And for my last comment, for all you people thinking that Mayweather actually added quite a bit of buys, I totally disagree. I think there were more distinguished reasons listed above which played a much bigger part than Mayweather's popularity. I'm not saying he didn't bring in a few fans, but for the most part he didn't.

The fact that the two most popular fighters in the sport were involved didn't hurt...

I don't think Floyd is all that big. It's all without a doubt Oscar that made this big. My friend was callin his friends about the fight and telling them if they wanted to watch with us the fight, he was calling him Mayflower, I thought it was funny and none of his friends corrected him. I'm sure he knows and they knew who Mayweather was.

that plus there was actual advertising and commercials for the fight on tv. most of the time there is NO commercials for the fight other than on the network itself(HBO, SHOtime...bla bla)

Sorry, one person doesn't set the all-time PPV record.

This fight almost doubled Oscar's next biggest fight, which was the Trinidad fight.

You're just plain ****** if you deny the fact that Oscar was fighting Mayweather, and not anyone else, that this fight now holds the record.

People did care about Mayweather because everyone wanted him to lose! He did a good job being the villian even to the last second when he wore the sumbrero coming into the ring.

So I guess DLH could get 2.2 million buys with anyone?
