    sadly, oscar is an underachiever

maybe im the only one who thinks it seemed like oscar should be up there with the two sugar rays, but hes still an underachiever. i know he has never been blown out in a fight except maybe b-hops which is acceptable because they never should have been in the same ring to being with, but oscar had so much hype around him and still does, you would think he would not have five losses, and lost the fights the way he did. The reality is this: beating tito trinidad would have been the most gratifying win possible for de la hoya, but he choked. plain and simple, had the right gameplan, then decided to test his floyd mayweather skills, and like floyd said oscar cant run as good as he can. oscar also could have won the next most gratifying fight of his career against the undefeated p4p king mr steak and potatoes for life, floyd mayweather, but once again he choked. if he only fouhgt (meaning throw punches) rounds 1-12 as opposed to 1-7 and 12 he would have won. i also don't think it was out of the realm of possibility for him to beat the faster sugar shane. I just think an all time great would have stuck it out, especially against tito and floyd, and won the extra 2 rounds needed to get a clear decision, because thats what great fighters would do.

he fought alot of good boxers but when he fought ELITES he lost....(except to Pernell)
Losing to Sturm was bad....(stfu you know he did)
    Losing to Mosley(twice)
    Losing to B-Hop
    Losing to Trinidad
    and now to mayweather

    just my opinion.

He had Tito beat, but couldn't hold onto lead, he just ran out of steam and didn't bother throwing punches, not even a slaping jab just to look good for the judges. His second fight with Mosley, he had a lead, but couldn't keep it. Against Floyd he go tired and didn't bother throwing punches. His final out wasn't even above 600 punches. Winky Wright against Ike managed about 1000 punches and didn't get any where near as tired as Oscar did against Floyd and he's older. I have no Idea why Oscar gets tired so badly, maybe he should have slept in a single bed through his training camp. I think he could have beaten Floyd, he should have jumped on him in the opening round. DLH "My game plan is going to be offensive minded"....Bull****. I think Oscar should stick to acting, he lost is fire after his first beating to Shane.

Agree with this thread. Oscar while a great fighter has always struggled and almost always fallen short when fighting other great or elite fighters at his even weight class. I dont really count B-Hop because I think he was just not strong enough at that weight. Its the fights against Mosley and Trinidad. His struggling and close wins against Quartey and Pernell. His record is also marred by the fact that he only beat 1 true undefeated elite fighter and that was Quartey. His other most notable wins are mostly Trinidad hand me downs.

I've always stated that DLH's legacy is more based on popularity and casual fan perception than actual substance. He is a great fighter and FOUGHT many the best of his era but is not THE best of his era as many people imagine.

I have to say, you guys are just silly.

Yes Oscar has lost against SOME elites.

And some of you fail to mention (this baffles me) that Oscar was straight robbed in fights against Trinidad, and the rematch with Mosley.

dont forget how he fought about every great opponent possible unlike many fighters, remind me again what other elite has Mayweather fought?

ALL HE HAD TO DO WAS USE THE ****ING JAB MORE AND HE WOULDVE WON THE GODDAMN FIGHT...I FELT LIKE HE HAD A COUPLE MIL ON MAYWEATHER WHEN HE STOPPED USING IT ALTOGETHER, AND WOULDN'T USE IT WHEN HOPKINS JUMPED UP AND YELLED AT HIM TO "JAB!!!"...When he would step in with the jab, it worked like a CHARM! There was one instance, where Oscar would hit Floyd with 5 jabs IN A ROW, not in combination, with every one of those jabs snapping back Floyd's head. If Oscar would have came in behind the jab before those big punches he would have had more luck.

Those jabs were doin some damage too. It's hard to knock someone out with a jab, even if you have a really big jab, but DLH was making Floyd's head move back and snap back...you could tell it was doin damage. Then he just stopped using it. ****, when he was using it, I remember thinking, Floyd has no answer for that shot. Just keep using that jab and you'll have a happy Cinco De Mayo, Oscar....wtf.

Then the ****ing fight almost gets called a draw when Mayweather clearly won by at least two rounds...Mayweather's the ****...good guy, bad guy, racist guy, wife beater, punk ass mouth runner, doesn't matter. Inside that ring, he writes a poem titled 'The Sweet Science' with a foreword titled 'How to ruin Cinco De Mayo in Vegas'

Oscar's flurries were highly ineffective, however I thought he should do more of what he did in the 2nd, when he was holding and hitting with like 16 left hooks to the body...That seemed to work well. I liked how well Oscar worked technically vs Mayweather, keepign his hands up most of the time. That was the best guard based defense I've ever seen, aside from Wright.

If mayweather wouldn't have began holding on the inside he would've gotten beat up way worse. He ate a decent shot to the head, went back to his corner, forgot which middle round it was, and that convict vagrant hang-on, Roger, told him to 'tie him up' when he gets on the inside. Smart, but still aggravating. Biggest fight of the year and you're telling your guy to hold, **** you! right?...anyways, im out like last year.

He's probably considered an underachiever because of all the hype he got after winning the gold medal and being considered one of the most popular boxer ever. He has fought great opponents and better ones have beaten him. Only B-Hop KO him and thats cause DLH was fighting at weight that was too big for him. I understand though that he could be considered an underachiever because with his mass popularity you would think he was undefeated.
