By Jake Donovan - Year two of the re-invented Boxing After Dark series kicks off this weekend with a lightweight battle that has the public split on picking the outcome. Juan Diaz puts his undefeated record (31-0, 15KO) on the line as he faces the biggest challenge of his career in Acelino Freitas (38-1, 32KO) this Saturday at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, CT (HBO, 10PM ET/PT).
The bout may not scream Fight-Of-The-Year, but it's a return to the original intentions of HBO's one-time hit series. Once known as a can't-miss late night institution, the series has since developed into a rehab clinic for its house fighters on the comeback trail, and Showcase Showdown for its rising stars who felt the need to feast on second-tier competition one or two weight classes below them.
Prior to the start of 2006, a meeting was held at 1100 Avenue of Americas to address such issues. In efforts to respond to the growing criticism and concern that B.A.D. had become b-a-d, HBO promised a revamped series, while returning to its roots.
The new season, which began exactly this time last year, would return to focusing on the lower weights, offering compelling matchups rather than foregone conclusions. [details]
