Acelino Freitas-Juan Diaz: Don King to the Rescue

By Cliff Rold - What has been the best fight on U.S. TV in 2007 that didn’t cost an extra $50 bucks? Any real fight fan would probably say Jean Marc Mormeck winning the World cruiserweight championship from O’Neill Bell last month. What was the best fight you saw on HBO in 2006 without adding to your cable bill? It would come as no surprise if many answered with the rematch between Paul Briggs and Tomasz Adamek at 175 lbs. Now ask what both of those fights have in common? The answer is Don King.

Right about now, there are some who are putting their fingers in their ears. The mere mention of King’s name in regard to something good for boxing is inconceivable to those who can list the full range of the man’s sins. Count me among those who, having read the work of the legendary Jack Newfield, should join his detractors.

I can’t here because of what is abundantly clear: for those who are tired of paying for long nights of mismatched undercards and over hyped main events; who are tired of seeing HBO on their cable bill and knowing that all they got for their loyalty was Wlad Klitschko-Ray Austin or Miguel Cotto-Oktay Urkal; for all those real boxing addicts, Don King is your friend right now. True. But, Blaze of Glory was money well spent. I don't think the DLH -MAYWEATHER card is all that great for the $54.95.

It's hard to say this, but Don King has really done some good things lately...in fact, outside of the heavyweight division, where he has helped prevent unification for years, he has made some great fights in the lower divisions and has negotiated in good faith with rival promoters (putting on cards with Top Rank and Golden Boy)...

Is he really the impediment to heavyweight unification? Or is it the Klitschkos who are treated like Tyson by the network without delivering ratings or buys?

And Brently, I agree that BOG was a great card. But PPV is a niche in a niche market. King is making the best fights with highest public accesibility.

Oh and thanks everybody for reading.

He had guys with belts for years and he NEVER staged a unification fight. Byrd, Brewster, Rahman and Ruiz all held the various belts, most of them all at the same time, but none of them ever fought one another. When Byrd lost to Wlad any hopes for unification were over because DK doesn't deal with the Klitschkos and vice versa (I'm sure there's blame on both sides there). Brewster and Rahman then both left DK and Ruiz lost to Valuev...

Look at it the other way too...everyone wanted Don to make moves to imit his financial windfall. For instance, King allegedly proposed his two titlists (at the time Byrd and Ruiz) each in a bout with his two non's. He was then pressured to put his guys against each other with winners blah, blah...that's just him trying to have his influence and money limited., This is still a business.
