    Ward to train Gatti!
    By "Irish" Pat Kelley
Former WBU junior welterweight champion, and legendary ring warrior, "Irish" Micky Ward has been selected to replace Buddy McGirt as Arturo "Thunder" Gatti's trainer, for his July 14 bout in Atlantic City, NJ. Though Ward has been present in Gatti's corner for each of last six fights, it was only in a supportive role. Come July 14, the two warriors will team up, in what may ultimately be the final fight of Arturo Gatti's historic career. "I'm surprised, but excited at the opportunity to train Arturo. He's a three-time world champion, and this could open up opportunities for me with other big name fighters," Ward stated. Ward and Gatti developed a close friendship following their three epic wars, The first meeting between the two, in which Ward earned a narrow split-decision victory, will forever be remembered as one of the greatest fights in boxing history. Ward and Gatti will depart to the Palm Beach, Florida area on April 29, where they will begin a nine-week training camp.

Haha thats kinda ironic. I wonder how Ward is going to be as a trainer. I know he was training hos nephew (and prolly still is). The nephew lost his first fight though and I don't know how he is doing now

Why would one of the worst technical (but still relevant) boxers of all time train anybody? I mean even if Gatti needed toughness, which we all know he doesnt, it isn't something you can train into people very well. Micky Ward was an outstandingly entertaining fighter. He was a warrior and a tribute to everything that can be right about boxing, but he just should not be training people unless he always knew how to actually box and just never showed it.

shouldn't you know who your opponent is before you depart to train? I mean I know its between the two contenders, but it is odd they still haven't announced it, especially now that Margario-Williams could fall on the same day. I kind of get the feeling Arturo isn't taking this fight seriously..just by it taking so long to announce the opponent, and now picking Micky Ward as his trainer.

I dont think you guys fully understand about ths situation...you watch Mickey fight and all you see is a guy who brawls????? You watch him fight and you think he doesnt know technique or have smarts? If that was actually true then you are saying that just about any super tough guy with heart could do what he did over the course of his career. Man, just because a guy doesnt have Mayweather-Jones-Mosley type skills doesnt mean he doesnt have skills. To put it in the most obvious way.... boxing, and the things fighters do in the ring, are QUITE A BIT harder than they LOOK.
