Much was made in the media about longtime Oscar De La Hoya trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. moving over to the camp of his son Floyd Mayweather Jr. Did the elder Floyd bring inside knowledge with him on how his son can defeat the Golden Boy in the May 5 De La Hoya-Mayweather superfight? If so, Floyd Jr.'s head trainer Roger Mayweather doesn't want to hear it. Roger made it abundantly clear today in a profanity-laced tirade that he is the one in charge and although he doesn't mind Floyd Sr.'s presence in camp, he doesn't plan to even ask Oscar's former trainer for any advice.
"It doesn't bother me at all," Roger Mayweather commented today. "He can be there, he can get on his rocking chair, I don't give a f--k. The bottom line is this: we're going to win the fight regardless. I don't give a f--k who is there. I don't train Floyd based on his Daddy. I don't train Floyd based on who is there and who ain't there. Angelo Dundee could be in the corner and I wouldn't give a f--k.
"The bottom line is this, skill wins fights. I know enough about boxing, I fought more fights than my brother has so I don't need to ask his opinion on how to win, because number one, Floyd got there based on what I've done, not what the f--k he's done. He may have set the ground plan before, but Floyd's on pay-per-view because of me, not because of his Daddy.
"What do I need to ask the guy when I know f--king boxing myself? I fought 27 world champions. What is he going to tell me? I fought more world champions than him, what is he going to tell me?
"I can't tell him not to be around his son. That's my brother, it ain't like I hate him.....the bottom line is he's still my brother, regardless of what people think or what people say or how we disagree. All brothers disagree. If we're doing something together, we're going to have a disagreement but the bottom line is I'm the one who's doing the training. I don't worry about the disagreement that he has with me because I'm the one who's training him.
"My brother can train god--mn Muhammad Ali. That don't mean sh-t. That don't make no difference because he trained Muhammad Ali.....You've got to remember one thing. I know boxing. I had 77 f--king fights. I had way more fights than my brother, so why do I have to get my brother's opinion about how to beat De La Hoya when I trained Floyd to beat the last 37 mother-f--kers? Why do I need Floyd (Senior's) opinion? Did he beat Zab Judah with Floyd or did he beat him with me? Did he beat Sharmba Mitchell with Floyd or did he beat him with me? Did he beat Jose Luis Castillo with Floyd or did he beat him with me? Did he beat Diego Corrales with Floyd or did he beat him with me? All right then, what do the f--k do I have to ask him for his opinion for?
"I know how to train a fighter. I've been doing it all my life. I was doing that when I was a kid. That's why I'm the best in the world at what the f--k I do. You'll never see a person do what I do. Not with the hand pads you won't.
"[Floyd Sr.'s presence] is not awkward for me. It don't bother me one way or another. He can be there or not, it doesn't matter to me. I train him, so it don't matter. I'm not uncomfortable with that. I'm more uncomfortable being in jail."
