Joe Calzaghe is one of the biggest names in boxing over here in the UK along with Ricky Hatton but he has never fought outside of the UK! So I don't know why people would think he's a big name in the USA? His fight against Manfredo Jr was broadcast in USA but the fight was crap (through no fault of Calzaghe) and never showcased what Calzaghe can do. USA is boxings home! Thats why Ricky Hatton had to go to make a name for himself! Jermain Taylor may be well known in America but he isn't really over here unless your a boxing fan. My dad doesn't know who Jermain Taylor is but he knows who Calzaghe is but boxings much bigger in USA so Taylor is considered the better known and bigger name fighter! Frank Warren and Calzaghe should have to splash the cash if they want the big name fights! If Joe goes to America and beats Taylor or Hopkins or pays to get them to UK then he will become a big name in boxing much like Hatton did when he beat Kostya Tszyu! Thats just my opinion of course.
Calzaghe's Popularity!

i believe that he in uk, is a major player on the boxing scene, and that is not something that can be taken away ever. it´s a natural thing, that the national pride and the honour of having af a world champ, is making him a household name all over uk.. and rightfully so..
world wide i believe that the "hardcore" boxing fans, those who follow the sport, also knows the calzaghe name, but i doubt if they find on the same level as the people in britain.. the lack of big names on his resume, is a HUGE handicap, the fact that he has said im going to the states to make my name, and then didnt is making him look foolish. the fact that he first blew the american ibf world champ lacy away, and then needed manfredo to make his name known in the states is crazy, he should have went to the states on a tsunami after the lacy beating.. instead he opted for bika and manfredo..
in the twilight of his career i think he is losing a respect, there is only one to blame for the lack of bigname boxers on his resume, and that is joes..
there have been so many excuses for not taking on the cremé de la cremé in boxing, and some say it´s everybody else´s fault, but if calzaghe wanted to establish his name as a legend or p4p boxer he should have done what hatton and lennox did..
whether he would have succeded against the best is another question, but he at least could have said that he tried.. -
I must say that I do find it amusing how Ricky Hatton is being used as the benchmark of what Calzaghe should be doing. Thats Ricky Hatton who has been WIDELY and constantly criticised and disparaged on these forums for a good couple of years now. If Hatton is doing it so right, maybe some of you guys should stop trying to shoot down him and his career all the time.Comment

Skils wise he aint no benchmark for JC, mainly cos he aint got that many skills lol.

Yeah, but MANY people on this forum have criticised him for fighting bums in America, MANY people on this forum criticised him for taking the Castillo fight in America. MANY people on this forum do not recognise him as a top-10 fighter. A lot of people on this forum even criticise him for not clearing up Junior Witter from his own country. MOST people on this forum say that he would not have a chance against Cotto, or Maywhether, or De La Hoya. MANY people on this forum criticise Hatton for moving back down to JWW. In fact a lot of people completely discredit his victory over Collazo AND Tyszu saying that the latter was past it and the former actually deserved the win.Ricky Hatton is the benchmark in terms of the fact he went to America to get some real fights,

So even if you go and you do it right, you get no more respect around here.Comment
