    Influence?

    FROM EXCERPT ABOUT ALI'S INFLUENCE.....

"It may be tough to deal with, to live up to a certain standard, but it is something that your conscience will have to live with one way or another. Being in the public eye as a successful and widely known athlete or entertainer automatically puts you at role model status. It is unavoidable and it needs to be taken seriously. Some just do not or cannot take that responsibility seriously. I mean, how many athletes and entertainers are arrested for drugs each year? How many of them are caught out falling down drunk coming out of clubs and parties? How many of them are put in situations where they are given a voice that reaches millions of kids and they end up sending a less than respectable message? I remember not too long ago that R&B singer Usher was interviewed in a magazine, "Rolling Stone" or one of them, and he was talking about cheating on a girlfriend and he said something like "Cheating is just what men do. If you are a man and you have opportunity then you are going to take advantage of it. That's what men do."

"Really? Is that so? I don't know what kind of scrubs little Usher is hanging out with but I don't think every man out there is so weak minded that he can't control himself and honor his commitment to a woman.

How about the influence that the trio of Lindsey Lohan, Britney Spears and Paris Hilton have on teenage girls across this country? Late night drinking and partying (and who knows what else) are glamorized to the point where fourteen years old from every corner of the globe absolutely can't wait to go clubbing, too. I read in a magazine the other day where they did a big story on celebrities and their drug and alcohol use and they quoted about twenty singers and actors, including the singer named "Pink" who said that she "doesn't consider marijuana a drug because it is a plant and comes from the earth." Pink is the same genius who was photographed coming out of a store carrying newly bought (supposedly healthy) bottles of "SmartWater" under her arm... while smoking a cigarette. That cancer causing tobacco she sucks in comes from the earth, too, as a plant so I guess it's just a wonderful all around substance, huh?

It's times like those that you wish that they didn't give a public forum, where they can reach millions of impressionable kids, to every idiot that can sing, dance or catch a football because some kid somewhere is looking up to them and emulating them in some fashion, or did, and serious responsibility comes with that. Not legally, of course, but morally for sure. "
