Well good thing he's warming up on the great Peter Manfrodo! First Calzone needs to unify his division, then he needs to defeat a reigning American champion, and finally to acheive greatness he needs to become champion in light heavyweight.
What reigning American Champion? The reigning champion at 168 is Welsh. The nearest contender is a Dane. If you mean an American undefeated titleholder, then yeah, Joe really needs to... wait a minute, wasn't Jeff Lacy an undefeated American titleholder?

And when he isn't challenging old people he challenges little people like Winky.
What is the difference between Calzaghe challenging Winky Wright and Hopkins challenging Felix Trinidad and Oscar De La Hoya? Both of those guys were in their prime two weight divisions below, as Winky is against Calslappy.

I'm not particularly a calzaghe fan but I have to stand up and be counted when there's nonsense in the air.

With that said, Calzaghe was challenging Jones for the best part of a decade. He has been challenging Hopkins for not much less. He is challenging Taylor and Wright NOW, when HE is the older man and supposedly past his prime. So that little statement doesnt hold up for you.
IF he beats Manfrodo first? Come on now, don't try and elevate this beyond what it is: a PR stunt and exhibition fight. Calzone's record is already far inflated to be including tv personalities on his list of "great accomplishments". What next, Sergio Mora? Ishe Smith?

So Calzone, a fighter who simply hasn't accomplished much apart from being a home town champion, calls out to RJJ when Roy was the world champion and P4P king, expecting him to fly over and fight the nobody Calzone?

He calls out Hopkins at 41 years old whe Bernard is the world champion and making history by defeating world champion light heavy Tarver, and expects HIM to fly over and fight nobody Calzone?

Oh, and now Calzone challenges a small middleweight like Wright because Joe won't dream of fighting at a higher weight class like true champions. Let me guess, does he expect Wright to fly over too?

What next, will Joe challenge Pacman? Marquez? No, they have to get in line behind all the Contender tomatoes.

Manfredo is a decent win for Calzaghe, but everyone knows in their heart that Calzaghe must fight an elite guy after this win. Manfredo is underrated in some ways, and is solid..but does not get Calzaghe any status.

Calling out someone and really making sacrifices to fight them are two different things.

When he fought Lacy he was on the right track. Then he needed to unify his division so people would actually believe him when he says he is world champ. He's not world champ until he unifies a division.

The difference? The difference is Hopkins defeated unified world light heavy champ Tarver and made history. The difference is Hopkins is looking to fight a true heavyweight and make history again. All at 40+ years old. THAT'S a legendary fighter.
