London, Feb 25 (ANI): Pakistani born English boxing sensation, Amir Khan who won the silver medal at the Athens Olympics had to flee a sports centre after a hate mob turned on him, labelling him a “Paki b*****d”.

The 19-year-old champ saw his 14-year-old brother Haroon win a bout against a local teenager from Liverpool.

The fans, who only moments before the match, had posed for photographs with Amir, turned against him after the result, and hurled abuses at him, singling him out for their boy’s loss.

According to The Sun, one called him a “Paki b*****d”.

“Haroon only won because of you,” said another.

Amir, who was stunned by the response and the vitriolic, jumped into his car, as officials came to his rescue, locking the doors to stop the irate mob from following him.

“It was worrying for a while. It was a bit sad, not what you normally expect. The Liverpool boxing crowd have always treated me with respect and I appreciate them for that. It was just a few loudmouths shouting the odds. It was a very big crowd for an amateur show but I know they didn’t spoil it for the majority of fans,” said Amir.

Amir’s father, Shajaad has however, expressed concern over the incident.

“It could have got very nasty. There was a lot of pushing and shoving. Someone said he was spat on but I did not see that. Nothing like this has happened to him before. I feared for his safety,” said Shajaad.

“The Liverpool boxer had a huge following but I couldn’t understand why they were shouting at Amir because the result was not even close. What made it worse was before the fight Amir posed for pictures with these supporters and signed autographs. When their lad lost the mood turned,” he said.

“It’s time to think about Amir’s security. Everywhere he goes there must be someone with him,” he added.

The father of Haroon’s opponent, himself a former professional boxer, however, apologised after the incident, even as Amir’s representatives complained to the Amateur Boxing Association, which launched a probe into the affair.

“It only needs one bad apple. One fella got up, the rest followed,” said Amir’s trainer Mick Jelly. (ANI)
