Mexico's legendary trainer Ignacio 'Nacho' Beristain sees something special in Filipino fighter Jimrex Jaca, and if given the chance, he would like to train the southpaw from Sibulan, Negros Oriental.
Los Angeles-based Jeff De Guzman, an adviser to Jaca, informed in an exclusive interview that during the Juan Manuel Marquez-Marco Antonio Barrera bout at the Mandalay Bay recently, Beristain caught up with him and informed him of his interest to train Jaca.
"Senor Nacho told me that he wishes to train Jimrex Jaca, and he can make him a world champion," De Guzman said.
On November 25 last year, Jaca challenged Marquez for the latter's WBO featherweight title, and gave the Mexican champion all he could handle before succumbing to a ninth-round knockout defeat.
The bout became controversial when referee Lawrence Cole was caught on camera telling Marquez it was ok if the fight had to be stopped due to cuts as he was ahead on points.
Beristain is considered by many as one of the world's finest trainers, and boasts of the Marquez brothers-- superfeatherweight Juan Manuel and superbantamweight Rafael--in his stable of world champions.
The Marquez brothers are the only brother tandem in history to hold the WBC titles at the same time.
Beristain had also trained Ricardo Lopez, arguably the greatest Mexican fighter in history.
Jaca, who is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and managed by Rex 'Wakee' Salud, is currently trained by Robert Bubuli Jr.
Bubuli, according to sources, has indicated he is willing to join hands with Beristain if that's what his ward wants to do.
Beristain, meanwhile, has informed that Juan Manuel has already signed a contract to fight in September, and prefers Manny Pacquiao as opponent.
“Manny is a demon in the ring, and he can react like a wildcat. He’s very fast, and you can’t predict what’s going to happen in any round. And Freddie Roach has improved his right hook too and his overall style," Beristain told Boxingscene.
Beristain, however, says the key for Marquez to beat Pacquiao "would be lots more sparring with natural southpaws, which were in scant supply for Juan last time around.”
