Arum Makes Play For Soto To Face Marquez

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has asked the World Boxing Council to “enforce Humberto Soto” as the mandatory challenger to newly crowned WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez even though Manny Pacquiao is listed as the mandatory challenger. [details]

Soto is good, but why is Arum pushing for him to get a shot at Marquez when Pacquiao is should be his top priority.

Good question. This, more than anything, is Arum trying to mess with Golden Boy. GBP knows that Marquez has two options: Barrera rematch or Pac rematch. If Pac is the mandatory and it is enforced, then Arum may lose out on promoting it (no way they come to an agreement, so it will go to what would be an incredibly intriguing purse bid). If Soto is the mandatory, and it is enforced, it is not nearly a big a loss to Top Rank if they don't promote that one. He's just covering himself here. He wants Pac to fight Valero after Solis for huge money in the Phillippines or Japan.

If he really believed in Soto, he would push for a Pac-Soto fight, but I haven't heard him say anything about that potential fight, which SHOULD be easy to make if he really thinks he is Pac's LEGITIMATE promoter. Interesting that he is doing things like he's on borrowed time with Pac...

Soto is a legitimate threat and I would love to see him fight Pacquiao or Marquez in the near future, but I much rather see the Marquez vs. Pacquiao rematch now. I don't know what the **** Arum is doing, he probably knows he wouldn't be able promote the rematch and if Soto pulls it off (which is possible, he's a powerful puncher, good boxer who has recently come into his own) Pacquiao versus Soto is a huge fight where he rakes in all the profits.

Id rather just see Soto against another champ so Pac and JMM can settle this once and for all. Soto can fight Valero or Guzman.
