Can anyone answer me this please?

Hi there

I registered here since I was trying to find the name of a boxer, I’ve google searched as much as I can but haven’t had any luck.

It was a few years ago I think 80/90s and remember seeing some footage from North America on TV

There was an up and coming welter/middleweight(?) fighter who was starting off a promising career and was tipped for huge things, and came up against a guy he should have beaten comfortably. After twelve rounds the other guy wins on points.

It was only when the fighter’s trainer went over to congratulate the winner that he shook his gloves and realized he had a pound or two of lead stuffed in them. The winner tried to hide his gloves from the trainer, but the trainer realised what he was up to immediately. Unfortunately the loser had his jaw shattered in numerous places but had stood up to the pounding for twelve rounds and never dropped to the canvas.

The guy had been beaten into retirement in his early twenties and never managed to recover and eventually died of alcoholism a couple of years later.

I remember watching it on some sports channel in complete disbelief at what was going on, I just wanted to find out the poor guy’s name

The specifics you described aren't quite the same as this guy's, but are you thinking of Billy Collins?

Thats crazy. I guess they didn't think that they would get caught. Poor guy he gets his career ended and hurt badly. Didn't they think about that, he could have gotten killed. I guess some people will do anything to win.

The Panama Lewis incident was because Panama actually removed padding from the inside of the glove so that his fighter would hit harder.

It was Billy collins, when I read that the trainer was also his dad, that nailed it for me.

It's funny how time can exaggerate the whole story about lead-lined gloves, still, bare knuckles for 10 rounds is bad enough. Christ knows what I would have imagined in a few years time.

Yeah that was sum sick ****! The fighter ur talkin about is Billy Collins I beleive. I read an interview with the fighter who did it to him in Boxing Monthly a few years back - very sad reading.
