What wins a round for a boxer?

I've always wondered what judges look for in a fight to give a fighter a round. All night Saturday you would hear Steward or Lederman tell us how las vegas judges usually favor aggression. For me, a fighter who controls the fight and throws the most punches deserves to win the round. I also compare the current round to the last round, and see if the boxer who just loss the last round, made a good comeback to win the new round.

What do you guys usually look for when you do your own personal scoring?

There are set rules but I look for defense, activity or agression. But it has to be effective agression. That's always a problem do you score for the brilliant defense with accurate offense or for all out offense.

The technical 4 aspects a round is to be judged on are:
        Effective agression
        Clean Punching
        Defense
        Ring Generalship

In my opinion the least important of those is Ring Generalship.
The other 3 are of prime importance.

The **** is just so obvious.

If you have Roy Jones Jr dancing around landing clean shots on someone....you're forced to give the round to Roy especially if the other guy didn't land anywhere near what he did even if Roy was backing up.

If you have Antonio Margarito coming forward throwing 90 punches a round backing his opponents up and they aren't landing clean or EVEN if they're landing clean and margarito lands more.....you give the round to Margarito.

Either effective agression, or clean punching take and pick.

Somewhere along the lines comes ring generalship and defense.

I wanna slap the first ******* that scored Penalosa/De Leon in favor of Gerry. **** just isn't how you score fights.

first of all, good topic to start...

judging is so important. there is many ways to score rounds. different judges look for diffeent things. but like buddy above said, some fights are jus really easy to score rather one guy is jus dancing using the ring out boxing a guy from the outside all night, or rather he is moving forward throwing 90 punches out working his opponent landing more clean shots... those fights are easy, and any sober boxing fan could judge them, but when it comes down to the close fights where fighters land a close number of punches n close accuracy percentage... then it gets tough, u gotta look for everything, who is the aggressor, who is landing the cleaner, more effective shots.. who is the better defender who is defending more shots... who is the techinition who is controlling the fights pace. i vote based on all those things in close fights/rounds, i also look for who gets off first, who gets hurt, and like the first guy said, compare each round to the last.. that way u can see who is really stepping it up / trying new things / trying to win the fight...

GREAT topic, lets get some more opinions

great feedback. when i initally made the post, i was stating my opinion on close fights, like the barrera-marquez fight, not blowouts like a mayweather-baldomir type fight.

i'd love to speak to a few judges and find out what their decisions are based on.

i look at effective aggression, who gets hurt and clean punching. defense last, but its definetly important if the aggression isnt having any effect because of good defense
