    Only In Boxing...

Can you make someone miss or block 1140 punches and STILL not win a round..
Sorry but aggression if it is not effective.. then its not effective.. the word effective is CLEARLY defined in whatever dictionary you look it up in..
I though Boxing was the art of hitting and NOT GETTING HIT...

I am not saying Penalosa should have won.. but there is something very wrong when you veiw the stats.. Ponce de Leon clearly got out boxed and didnt land a meaningful PUNCH the whole fight..
Busy is USELSS if its not effective

    Only in Boxing folks..
    Punches Landed / Thrown

    Ponce de leon
    259 / 1399 total 19%
    46 / 596 jabs 8%
    213 / 803 power 27%

    Penalosa
    175 / 481 total 36%
    43 / 134 jabs 32%
    132 / 347 power 38%

The overall percentages should not matter if one fighter outlanded the other by a hundred punches. Also it depends on how much damage those landed punches did. Otherwise, if you don't give the aggressor some credit in the scoring, boxing would just degenerate into exaggerated amateur style rules where everyone plays it safe, throws a few quick flurries of light punches and then takes the round off to win on the scorecards.

You need to favor aggression because it's what breathes life into the fight and therefore the sport. Not giving a bit of weight to the guy trying to push the fight when calculating the sport is doing boxing a diservice.

Remember, boxing is a sport and sports are entertainment above all else. When boxing ceases to be entertaining, what is the point? The contestants may as well be fighting in a gym for their own ego. You don't win a round by just being defensive; you need to throw some leather yourself.

If the numbers of landed punches were more or less equal, I'd say go with the guy landing the higher % but I haven't seen the fight so I don't know who landed the more effective, damaging, punches, just that one fighter oulanded the other by a significant portion, even if he had to throw a lot of punches to do so.

De leon outlanded Gerry so the %'s don't matter much if the numbers landed are that great. Also a lot of judges seem to favour aggression. Thats life

Punchstats are kind of dumb. It doesn't take into account how much power is behind a punch. You can have a guy who is fast but doesn't have power and he lands 300 power shots (non-jabs) and he doesn't hurt a guy who is powerful and throws and lands less but his punches do more damage.

But it was interesting in the MAB v JMM fight when at one point they both had throw the same amount of punches.

it the one who controls the fight IMO

for example if a person makes the person follow him uneffectively thing he win the round like Willie the Pep won a round without throwing a punch. another thing is pushing around the fighter.

number of landed punchs doesnt mean much for me but it a good indicatoer on how they guy controls the fight

I understand what everybody is saying.. WHAT I AM SAYING is why doesnt 1100 missed punches count for anything.. I mean one judge didnt give a single round to Gerry.. that is just wrong..
At the end of the day. t5he judges aren't there to ensure the more entertaing fighter won.. But to detremine who OUTBOXED who.. and DEFENCE is a BIG part of boxing..

Defense should count, but in the end, better/more landed punches counts more than defense...Also, like someone else said, its who is dictating the fight.

A fighter can get outworked easy. If he can make the other guy miss repeatedly and come back with shots every time, then he gets lots of points in my book. If all you do is make the other guy miss, then you aint fightin, and are basically doing the same thing as if you were hurt and trying to avoid punishment.

Ive never seen that mysterious round of Willie Peps, but if he threw no punches that round and I saw the other guy land just one, I wouldve given it to the other guy.
