I just watched the fight, and scored it like this:
JMM-John
1:10-9
2:10-9
3:9-10
4:9-10
5: 10-9
6:9-10
7:9-10
8:10-9
9:10-9
10:9-9*
11:9-9*
12:9-10
*******-assed point deduction
The way I see it, Marquez lost for one reason and one reason only- a pedantic, over-officious referee. The guy was a wanker; every time Marquez threw a shot under chest level he was warned for going low. I think Marquez even hit John on the chest and got a warning. A joke. Even the fouls for which he had points deducted looked borderline.
It was a tentative fight, dominated by apprehension (mostly on John's part) and counterpunching. Yes, Marquez threw a higher volume of punches, but in some rounds John's were considerably more accurate and his jab wasn't bad, either. Marquez was just unlucky that such a prick ref was in charge.
John could probably beat most fighters at Featherweight and below, he's just a pretty tricky customer. He has a good jab, pretty fast hands and he's a good in-and-out fighter. I think someone like Pac would just blow him out of the water though; Marquez caught him with hooks and uppercuts a couple of times early on and he was properly rocked.
Two things- the fight was close, and John is a pretty darn good fighter, although not in Marquez's league.
