ok, let's just say that, Douglas always fought, the way he did against Tyson, using the jab well, and stuff. Do you think if he fought like this throughout his career, he would've alot better and possibly be considered a great heavyweight, I don't mean great as Ali or Louis, but just in general, great. I think if he alwasy fought like that, he could've done better, I can't see him being a top 10 heavyweight, but at least maybe in the 20.

yeah, I see what your sayin. but, like I said I could see him maybe as a top 20 heavyweight, but yeah like your said, basically an average fighter. Like if he fought the toughest era of the heavys, the 70's, I don't think he would've matched up well with guys like Ali or Frazier.Comment

I do think of him as a great yet under accomplished heavyweight.
When he was on he was on,but he lacked the It' factor that makes a boxer step up on every night.
I always say that Buster is the most underated heavy weight champion of all time based on my belief that he would have been much better off in other era's of boxing.
With his size, speed, and jab, he could have been a force during the years of smaller brawling style heavyweights.
Sadly he never reached his greatest potential other then this one night .
And it would be unfair to place him above others based on assumption as
all of this can also be said about any fighter including many who are not well known.
As of what we know about Buster and what he did in the ring I would place him some where just above
Marvin Hart, Jack Sharkey,Primo Carnera,Jess Willard,James J. Braddock,Ernie Terrell,Jimmy Ellis,Leon Spinks,John Tate,Mike Weaver,Michael Dokes,Gerrie Coetzee,Greg Page,Trevor Berbick,Francesco Damiani,Oliver McCall,Herbie Hide,Michael Bentt,Bruce Seldon,Francois Botha,Hasim Rahman.
I think that this would place him some where around 50th out of former champions.
I think he could have been a lot like Larry Holmes and maybe beat some of the same fighter that Holmes did but would have never been as dominate.
At his best he may have jumped 20 or so spots which would put him just under the best of the best .Comment

He beat mccall, berbick and a couple of other contenders too, its not like tyson is the only guy buster beat. Douglas from 85-90 was a contender in the heavyweight division.Comment

Early in his career, douglas got stopped by david bey and mike "the giant" white a 6"10 boxer who once played basketball in brazil, No, buster fought Tyson on iron mike's worst night, he doesnt make the top 20 lists, when he made a comeback in mid 90s, he tried to get out of the fight against louis monaco by staying down after being decked which resulted to a no contest.Comment

How about tim witherspoon, you have to admit, he has a solid heavyweight resume.Early in his career, douglas got stopped by david bey and mike "the giant" white a 6"10 boxer who once played basketball in brazil, No, buster fought Tyson on iron mike's worst night, he doesnt make the top 20 lists, when he made a comeback in mid 90s, he tried to get out of the fight against louis monaco by staying down after being decked which resulted to a no contest.Comment

Yes, but the level of competition after the Holyfield fight was poor. Buster Douglas was an average fighter, and his reputation is built on that outstanding performance against an unprepared Mike Tyson. That said, Douglas can't be blamed for the Tyson that turned up, and in theory he may have went down in history as a better fighter if he fought like that more often, but the guy was inconsistent, and IMO that achievement against Tyson was somewhat overshadowed by the pathetic showing against Holyfield.Comment
