Vazquez update: Israel Vazquez, who lost the world junior featherweight championship to Rafael Marquez via seventh-round TKO on March 3, had successful nose surgery Thursday in Beverly Hills, according to manager Frank Espinoza.
"Dr. Robert Kotler said Vazquez had shattered the inside of his nose," Espinoza said. "He removed the blood clots and cartilage that was not allowing Vazquez to breathe."
Vazquez suffered the injury in the opening round, but by the time the seventh round ended he could no longer breathe out of his nose and the fight was stopped after the round.
Initially, Vazquez was expected to be out of action for six or seven months, but Espinoza said the doctor believes Vazquez will be able to return sooner.
"The good news is Vazquez will be back much quicker than first anticipated and should be able to breathe much better," Espinoza said. "We will know exactly when in another two weeks, after Vazquez checks up with Dr. Kotler."
When he does return, Vazquez probably will fight Marquez again in a rematch. Vazquez had a rematch clause in the contract, and the fight was so action-packed that Showtime wants to put it on again as soon as he is ready to go.
"I talked to our promoters [Sycuan Ringside and Golden Boy] and they confirmed to me that we're on board for a rematch," Espinoza said. "My understanding is that Showtime definitely wants to do that fight again. TV wants it, we want it, Marquez is a true champion who I believe will honor his promise, and the fans want it. They want to see round eight."

That's very unlikely. The lead promoters will be Gary Shaw, GBP, and Sycuan Ringside. I'm sure Top Rank will not allow their fighter, to fight on that show.
