With so many people in boxing who have great connections you would think that someone would step up to really help this guy. There seems to be a lot of truely nice ex-boxers who had lived a life similer to his. why arn't they stepping up to show him how to break free? Boxing not only needs a retirement organization they also need a drug program. How many people do we have to lose before not only boxing but the world realizes that {just say no} does not always work? These boxers obviously are not lazy men. This is not a case of the addict lacking will power or heart. This is a case of the addiction being too strong even for the strongest of men.

He was orphaned at 8, his mother stabbed 26 times with a screwdriver and left to die. He has dealt with ******* addiction, alcohol, depression and run-ins with the law. In his recently published book, "Mi Vida Loca" (My Crazy Life), Tapia says he's been declared clinically dead six times.

When asked if he feels lucky to be alive, Tapia said he's surprised.

"I've done drugs, *******, beer, whiskey," he said. "Died the day of my wedding. I've been shot, I've been stabbed in the head."

It was reported by New Mexico reporter Mike Gisick that former champion Johnny Tapia is currently unconscious at an Albuquerque hospital from an apparent ******* overdose. Tapia's wife, Teresa, called police at about 4:30 a.m. after she found him in his hotel room at the Country Inn and Suites on Pan American Freeway Northeast and said he was having trouble breathing.
