but if you are talking pure boxing, maybe Pernell, Suar Ray Robinson was good but that was in his time. I guess with the evolution of the sport you'd really have to say greatest of his era. Oh and Jem Mace was quite the hard-ass in his day

A subjective and flawed question which will receive many subjective and flawed answers.

Sugar Ray Robinson was arguably the most complete.

        Ali was arguably the smartest.

Duran was arguably the most ferocious.

        Foreman was arguably the strongest.

Marciano was arguably the most improbable.

        Pep was arguably the slickest.

And Hagler was unquestionably the most marvelous. (Sorry)

        The list could go on...

One vote? For me - Roberto Duran.

Im not going to even vote here because i havent seen every boxer or know who had fought who etc etc.
But just one question. Why is Joe Louis rated as the best ever heavyweight? Is it because he mad e the most defenses? The thing is he beat a generation of heavyweights and when he beat them there was noone else to box. But it takes a while for the new generation of fighters to develop. Did Joe Louis beat any really good people though that would put him above Ali, or even Lennox lewis. And no i am not saying he isnt better than Lennox. But why is Louis rated so high. I saw him get knocked out by Scmelling and having a life and death fight with some lightheavyweight fight, and that is what i have seen of him and the rematch with schemmling. But is he the greatest because he made so many defenses is what im saying?

Jack Dempsey did more for the sport of boxing than any other fighter. He had audiences of like 100,000 come watch him fight before anybody really had cars. Before him boxing was not nearly as popular or exciting to watch.

He's also one of the better human interest stories boxing ever had going from a starving drifter in New Mexico to the greatest heavyweight champion of all time.
