X Marks Pound for Pound Spot
Bernard Hopkins Marks Manny Pacquiao As World's Best Fighter

    Michael Marley
    3/7/2007

(Editor's Note: All you Floyd Mayweather sycophants may wish to skip the following article which might be nausea-inducing. No one said the truth would be Pretty, Boy.)

NEW YORK--X has marked the spot. And the spot marked by X is P. And the spot marked by X which is P is the world's best fighter, P4P.

    Let me translate all this.

Reporter: Who is the best boxer?

Bernard Hopkins: Best boxer, best boxer where?

Reporter: Best boxer in the world.

    BHop: Manny Pacquiao.

I heard those words uttered with my very own ears Wednesday at Gallagher's Steakhouse by Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins, age 42, now fighting and promoting at the same time.

BHop rode Amtrak up from points south to represent Golden Boy Promotions at a presser designed to stimulate some interest in #1 WBO heavyweight contender Sultan Ibragimov's marking time bout Saturday night at Madison Square Garden against lightly-regarded Javier Mora.

X-Man never hesitated in giving his answer. He did not hem or haw and he delivered the punch line with all the speed and power of that body shot he used to TKO his future GBP equity partner, Oscar De La Hoya.

I doubted that BHop would want to address the ongoing legal imbroglio between GBP and Bob Arum's Top Rank but he did not hesitate on that topic either.

"Manny is a great, great fighter and so exciting," BHop said. "He is a great fighter who has got his whole country behind him. As far as the legal fight, I say we are right and that Arum is wrong. When time goes by, the victor will be Golden Boy Promotions. And we will have the option to deal with Pacman if we want to deal with him.

"As far as me looking at him, fighter to fighter, I look at him as a guy who has got real, genuine star power. He is not all hype. He is not one of those fighters who is part ability combined with a lot of hype. He is all ability.

"He is a fighter who can fight his ass off and he's got supporters and fans all over his country and all over the world. He is a genuine star," Hopkins said.

Just thought it was significant comming from the legendary B-Hop himself. He's hyping Guzman as well... Would love to see Pac vs. Guz match up.

Bernard Hopkins: Guzman Creating Major Buzz, May Turn Into De La Hoya Like Star!

      Michael Marley
      3/7/2007

NEW YORK--I was talking with promoter with portfolio Bernard Hopkins about the big Golden Boy show in Las Vegas March 17 which is topped by Marco Antonio Barrera-Juan Manuel Marquez. We chatted about his nephew DHop (Demetrius Hopkins) is in a crossroads fight on the under card against well-rounded veteran Stevie Forbes. And then I mentioned WBO junior lightweight champion Joan Guzman.

BHop's eyes lit up. This is one Golden Boy (co-promoter with Sycuan) client that really gets Hopkins' promotional juices flowing.

"Guzman...you're talking about some real raw talent right there. He's got lots of potential to do some big things. I'm talking about possibly becoming a big star, and I mean a De La Hoya type star. Guzman excites people and he is so popular in his own country (Dominican Republic). He's got star power and he is capturing the imagination of people.

"HBO loves the guy," Hopkins said. "HBO loves his ring style. He is a guy to watch and he definitely one of the top three rising stars in boxing right now. Maybe he can go right in against the winner of Barrera-Marquez. Guzman is creating a buzz and maybe we (GBP) can make that happen."

Hopkins said few people have his knack for "analyzing or dissecting" fights said that Barrera-Marquez will be a great showdown.

"Look at the history of these two guys," Hopkins said. "Barrera has got to show that he can be as good he was in his last fight, that he has more good fights in him. It's like the Antonio Tarver fight was for me. Barrerra is in that position where it is time to step up to the plate"

Is DHop up to the task against Forbes? BHop believes so but says his relative needs to prove his "bloodline" by winning and doing so impressively.

"Before Stevie Forbes went deep into The Contender, the TV show, he was a respected fighter. Now, at age 26, Demetrius has a chance to display his true talents against a most worthy opponent. He can put all his talents on display in this fight and he will need to. Is he part of the Hopkins dynasty? Now he's got the platform to go beyond potential and show he can move up to superstar status," Hopkins said.

"Demetrius has the USBA title. He is the #1 IBF contender and Stevie Forbes is a risky fight. Demetrius has to put up or shut up. This is Demtrius' coming out party on HBO."

DHop's manager couldn't have put it any better. Oh, you mean BHop IS DHop's manager? It's a fistic family affair.

I dunno I'm a pac fan too but I like to view and call Pac the most exciting fighter inside the ring not the "best boxer" because truly he's not.

Those compliments being given by Bhops maybe interpreted as sign that they're still leaving the door open for Pacquiao. They simply doesn't want to burn the bridge between the company and their would be fighter.

At this point I'm still praying that the court rules in favor of GBP.

I feel you brah. He's definitely the most fun to watch. Arum, GBP, Don King, etc, etc. see paper looking at this kid. I guess they see more potential because I heard GBP was offering a $1mil signing bonus. I don't know if he has mainstream caliber though but promoters GBP and Arum seem to be banking on it. Judging how quickly the Solis vs. Pac fight sold out in TX it seems like Pac is getting pretty known. It also helped that Arce is on the UC and he is quite famous in Tx with Mexican and now Pinoy fans who appeciate his ferocity and heart. The Solis fight seems interesting to me cuz you got a guy who is 5'10" and unbeaten, very dangerous for Pac. I wonder if this is PPV

Golden Boy is trying to slurp up to Pacman. He demolished a prime Barerra, and thats a better win that probably anybody on the p4p list. So having him number 1 could make sense.

Wow, I'm sure Hopkins being on DLH's team had nothing to do with that comment.

Yes Bro it is a PPV. And Solis? Indeed he's dangerous. Getting a 32-0 record is not a joke and knowing that this is a career defining fight for him expect the guy to go in there ready to do everything to make an upset.

Actually I'm viewing this as a crazy move on the part of Pac. He's got nothing to gain and everything to lose on this. He could have chosen the IBF champ Klassen or Soto, it's just the same risk but at least with better stature.

Are you saying B-hop was less than honest? I'm sure he wants Pac pretty bad. Who wouldn't want the Pacman in their stable.
