Impressive Mundine wins WBA crown
Anthony Mundine won the vacant WBA super middleweight title on Wednesday with a ninth-round stoppage of fellow Australian Sam Soliman in Sydney.
Mundine put Soliman down once in the second round and twice in the ninth before the referee intervened.
With the victory, Mundine erased doubts raised by his contentious split decision win over Soliman in 2001.
Denmark's Mikkel Kessler, who also holds the WBC belt, is the WBA's so-called 'unified'champion.
Mundine, 31, improves to 28-3 (22 KOs) while Soliman is 33-9 (13 KOs).
After losing his first world title shot against Sven Ottke in December 2001, Mundine beat American Antwun Echols to win the WBA title on points in September 2003.
Mundine then lost the title to Manny Siaca in May 2004 after one successful defence, before losing to WBA champion Mikkel Kessler in June 2005.
Mundine could now be a future opponent for Wales' WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe.

Would be a very interesting fight all the same. I don't believe Joe has ever faced an opponent with similar speed as Mundine. A totally different style than what Calzaghe usually prefers to face.Comment
