First of all, why the change in trainers?
“I just want to go back to my old style of boxing. I had some of the best performances of my career with ****ie and I want to go out on top. I think ****ie can take me there.”
What about Goossen? Did this decision have more to do with him or Wood?
“Well first off, Joe is a great guy and a helluva trainer and I care about and respect him. We had just gotten lackadaisical about training. It showed in my performance so I’m making the change.”
Why did you choose ****ie Wood to take over and what does he bring to the table that’s different or maybe better than Goossen?
“I’ve known ****ie since the amateurs so we are very comfortable with each other. He knows me inside and out so he knows my potential. He also knows my strengths and weaknesses. I also think he is best to take me back to the old style and using the jab.”
You have known Wood since the amateurs tell us little about that.
“Quite a few camps with the United States amateur team. ****ie is a really fun guy who really knows fighters mentally. He knows the good and bad with his fighters. He understands the good and the bad about fighters and works hard to get things done. When we first met, no one probably remembers this but, ****ie had hair! Not much, but he did have some. Since then he’s gotten older and bald and I’m so much wiser!”
Who would you like to fight against at 147?
“It honestly doesn’t matter at all. I know whoever I fight puts his pants on one leg at time, just like I do so it doesn’t matter to me. I believe in my ability and power no matter what the weight is.”
How many fights left?
“Honestly, it all comes down to the passion and love for the game. When that’s gone I will be too.”
