    New Chico Corrales Interview

    March 5, 2007
    By Chris Morris

First of all, why the change in trainers?

“I just want to go back to my old style of boxing. I had some of the best performances of my career with ****ie and I want to go out on top. I think ****ie can take me there.”

What about Goossen? Did this decision have more to do with him or Wood?

“Well first off, Joe is a great guy and a helluva trainer and I care about and respect him. We had just gotten lackadaisical about training. It showed in my performance so I’m making the change.”

Why did you choose ****ie Wood to take over and what does he bring to the table that’s different or maybe better than Goossen?

“I’ve known ****ie since the amateurs so we are very comfortable with each other. He knows me inside and out so he knows my potential. He also knows my strengths and weaknesses. I also think he is best to take me back to the old style and using the jab.”

You have known Wood since the amateurs tell us little about that.

“Quite a few camps with the United States amateur team. ****ie is a really fun guy who really knows fighters mentally. He knows the good and bad with his fighters. He understands the good and the bad about fighters and works hard to get things done. When we first met, no one probably remembers this but, ****ie had hair! Not much, but he did have some. Since then he’s gotten older and bald and I’m so much wiser!”

Who would you like to fight against at 147?

“It honestly doesn’t matter at all. I know whoever I fight puts his pants on one leg at time, just like I do so it doesn’t matter to me. I believe in my ability and power no matter what the weight is.”

    How many fights left?

“Honestly, it all comes down to the passion and love for the game. When that’s gone I will be too.”

I know you are a big boxing fan, tell us who wins these big fights that are coming up.

Castillo-Hatton: “Hatton doesn’t take body shots very well, and I know first hand that Castillo is one of the best body punchers ever. The “Omega Factor” is England. Not sure who wins if they fight there but anywhere else, Castillo beats him.”

DLH vs. Mayweather (and would you like another shot at Mayweather?):

“What Oscar is going to do to Floyd will be criminal. Don’t be surprised if he gets arrested! I would absolutely love another shot at Mayweather. He beat me fair and square but I had a lot going on outside the ring at that time. It would be a completely different fight this time around. I’d love another shot at Mayweather, definitely.”

Give us your thoughts on you versus the following:For some Colorado flavor, Stevie Johnston:

Stevie is a good friend. I will never fight him.”

Paul Malignaggi: “Never seen him fight, but you know I’ll fight anybody!”

Zab Judah: “Love to. I would love to fight Zab Judah. It’s a great fight.”

Arturo Gatti: “Like ****ie said they don’t want to send him into retirement on his back!”
Miguel Cotto: “Love to take that fight. He’s good but he’s not ready for someone like me yet. I’d beat him up. Ask ****ie!”

Ricky Hatton: “I will destroy Hatton at 147, period.“

        Hatton-Corrales actually might be made.

i would kill myself if it was. Two of my favorite fighters goin at it.

Id be hurt no matter what happened.

And I agree with everything he said.

except about him and mayweather. Staaaaaaaaaay away from mayweather. TERRIBLE styles matchup

Me too!!! And same with Cotto! But hey its for the good of the sport and thats more important! I try to be a boxing fan rather than a fan of boxers but sumtimes its hard! It was the same with Tito vs Vargas for me but that was a classic and im sure Chico vs RH and MC would be too!

chico is the man, the ****ing peoples champ as far as i'm concerned.

i'm a tad bit worried about the clottey fight but the thing about chico is he goes forward always, in and out of the ring, and i respect that a ton.

              I would love to see
              Corrales vs Hatton
              Corrales vs Judah
              Correles vs Cotto

Seem like they all would be action packed!
