My dad was a big boxing fan, we would watch the fights togather when I was a kid. I lived in a real small town, there was nothing at all to do, and luckily a boxing club opened up when I was 16, being such a big fan I joined up. I guess I grew up with it

I've always had a romantic notion of the lone warrior as a pure and somehow honorable class of people (probably from a youth spent watching anime and reading fantasy novels) and boxers struck me as the modern equivalent of the wandering fighting man. Reading books on Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Joe Frazier, and other great boxers who appeared to be men of character reinforced these beliefs.

I grew up with a lot of chaos and abuse in my household and the concept of these fighters being strong, pure, honorable and ultimately good willed, resonated with me.

I've been into the sport for a long time, it was like instant machismo that my favorite interest was boxing. I've admired it since early childhood, but didn't get serious into it until 13 or 14. I guess I saw a Muhammad Ali marathon in October of 2002 or 03 and from there was instantly hooked. Then I read Hurricane Carter's 13th round, which was beneficial becuz at that time in my life I was into radical politics so it helped create a bridge. From there, I became a voracious student of the sport, learning every tidbit possible about the sport. In a month, I became an expert. My life quickly transformed into a center of boxing. I started going to the gym, which I also became addicted to. In time, my life found new meaning through boxing. Now I'm a card-carrying Boxing Anonymous addict.

well, in my country boxing is almost dead, there is never any information on the news about boxing so for me boxing was just 2 guys beating each other. but recently they showed on tv all rocky movies, and that was one thing that started to change my mind. of course i saw rocky before, but it was a long time ago =P. but what definitevly got me in boxing is a anime series called Hajime No ippo, or Fighting Spirit. really, really great series. of course its exagerated, but its not overdone.

Tyson and playing Punchout were early influences. Then watching my man James Toney fight in the early 90's did it. seeing a guy from my town kick so much ass had me glued to the tube from then on.

Yeah, I'm a cashier at Wendy's on Main Street in Poughkeepsie. I also work the grill sometimes. Here's my advice, be a professional in something else, get a degree in medical or teaching, and write on the side. Writing is a great accessory to a regular life. You're a nice guy, and we could use more of those.
