There is a difference between "Italian American" and "Italian". If you have ancestry and your parents or their parents are immigrants, and you live in an Italian American community then you may lay claim to being Italian American. But not Italian. Nationaility is by birth, not by choice.
It's a pet hate of mine, I'm an Englishman living in Canada and I'm sick and tired of people claiming to be Irish and haranguing me for "oppressing" their "people" despite the fact that when their ancestors were Irish, so were mine!
If you mentioned "Greatest Italian Fighters" then right away I'm thinking of Pep, Graziano, Marciano, Basilio etc, but when you're talking about nationality and you want to get pedantic, well if you're born in the United States then you are American by nationality and by birth, not Italian!Comment

okay first of all, we are gettin into to way to much detail. This stuff doesnt even matter, all these guys are considered great ITALIAN fighters for a reason...
And im talking about ur immidiate roots... Im american, but if i followed YOUR logic i would be polish and that makes NO sense at all.
But if my dad was polish, and he had an accent and we ate polish food, etc etc etc, i would definetly consider myself part Polish.
Ask any Historian what nationality Graziano was, they are gonna tell you Italian. He may not be "techinically" Italian, but he is italian american. HE looks italian, he eats italian, he speaks with an accent, and is your steriotypical italianComment

Well then I will have to go with the argument THAT if you are are born in THE USA and Live there.. then you are American..okay first of all, we are gettin into to way to much detail. This stuff doesnt even matter, all these guys are considered great ITALIAN fighters for a reason...

And the ancestrial argument carries no weight..Comment

I still think it depends on where your parents are from. If your parents are Italian Americans, u are american.
but if ur parents were born and raised in Italy, and you are born in america, then you are Italian American.
I personally dont think it matters where your born. If you carry the nationality, and have all the traits that a stereotypical italian would have, you should be considered an italian.Comment

willie pep is the greatest of that list,
if you want a fighter who grew up in italy and fought out of Italy, it has to be Duilio Loi.

and came back less then 5 months later to fight the perfect fight against sadler and won in 15 rounds. Which is widely considered one of the greatest fights of all time...
Not to mention the fact that he had over 200 wins and less then 15 losses.Last edited by Kball15; 02-24-2007, 03:38 PM.Comment
