The RING Title Doesn't Get Enough Respect

The RING Champion is considered the true champion in his division, but still fighters are content chasing all the various paper titles rather than the real championship. Why would you fork out all these sanctioning fees and such for titles that are worth very little? You have Sam Peter stuck in this ridiculous triangle with the WBC over his mandatory shot for what is really a meaningless strap when you consider that three other guys have as much claim to being the HW Champ as the WBC Champion does.

What really gets to me, though, is when the RING champion has no other major title yet they still bill the fight as being for some ****ty belt like the IBO, IBA, etc. This happened in both Tarver-Johnson fights, Tarver-Hopkins, and most recently is going to happen in Hatton-Castillo. Why can't they just say it's for the RING Championship, which means more than all the other titles combined? The fighters and fans need to show the RING belt the respect it deserves...

yeah I agree bud. If the fighters themselves stopped chasing the paper titles and went after the ring belt and the ring started billing their belt as the world title then boxing would be so much better. But promoters and money issues always get in the way.

Basically its driven by the fans. If the fans didn't care about the paper belts than the fighters wouldn't either cause there wouldn't be any money in holding one.

The fact is boxers go after paper belts cause they know they'll make more money with them. Some fighters who are stars don't need them and don't bother with them, but all other fighters do.

If you want the Ring Title to be given more respect, shouldnt you start by giving Hatton more respect?

yes and no, yes because he does have the ring belt, and no because even though he has it, he went after a worthless paper title he was going to abandon anyway for the sake of getting one.

Just what I was about to write. Hatton is a prime example of a fighter disrespecting the RING title...
