this was back in the day when the kickboxing talent pool was a haven for straight up boxers who couldn't make it in regular boxing (surely there were exceptions). that's why if you watch alot of these old videos, you'll see alot of guys with crap kicking (and lowkicks were not allowed under american kickboxing as well), but use alot of slipping and parries commonly seen in traditional boxing. anyway, they had to impose rules and make fighters throw a minimum number of kicks per round just to make it look like kickboxing. the smaller talent pool made the chances for a fast rise to the top more possible.
