Wahlberg, Damon clinch "Fighter" roles
Wednesday February 14 6:12 AM ET
Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon, who teamed up as cops in "The Departed," are set to reunite as brothers in the boxing saga "The Fighter"
Based on the life of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his trainer brother **** Eklund (Damon), the Paramount Pictures project chronicles their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Mass., through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship. Wahlberg and Damon both hail from Boston, which is where "The Departed" was based.
Sources said their involvement is contingent on a script rewrite from Paul Attanasio ("The Good German"), which is due in a few weeks.
"I've been dying to do a boxing movie my whole career," one-time street fighter Wahlberg said in a recent interview. "I've been close to doing two, and they kinda fell apart, but it's something I'm very excited about."
Wahlberg, who nabbed an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in "Departed," next stars in the Paramount thriller "Shooter." Damon, who won a screenplay Oscar for "Good Will Hunting," recently wrapped Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret" and the casino caper "Ocean's Thirteen."
I cant wait for this!
