    Wahlberg, Damon clinch "Fighter" roles
Wednesday February 14 6:12 AM ET

Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon, who teamed up as cops in "The Departed," are set to reunite as brothers in the boxing saga "The Fighter"

Based on the life of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and his trainer brother **** Eklund (Damon), the Paramount Pictures project chronicles their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Mass., through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship. Wahlberg and Damon both hail from Boston, which is where "The Departed" was based.

Sources said their involvement is contingent on a script rewrite from Paul Attanasio ("The Good German"), which is due in a few weeks.

"I've been dying to do a boxing movie my whole career," one-time street fighter Wahlberg said in a recent interview. "I've been close to doing two, and they kinda fell apart, but it's something I'm very excited about."

Wahlberg, who nabbed an Academy Award nomination for his supporting role in "Departed," next stars in the Paramount thriller "Shooter." Damon, who won a screenplay Oscar for "Good Will Hunting," recently wrapped Kenneth Lonergan's "Margaret" and the casino caper "Ocean's Thirteen."

    I cant wait for this!

This will be a good movie - not a cheesy Pacquiao flick or TV-movie-quality Tyson or Ali flick, I'm hoping with the cast. They've both made some stinkers, but more often than not put out good films with Wahlberg especially on a hot streak of well-received films.

Wahlberg won't need a lot of help getting ready for the movie - he's usually in shape and is used to fighting.

      Good news...

Well they are exagerrating with this world title thing, I think it was IBA? Should be interesting though.

I wish someone would really take the time to do a Tyson biopic. His story is made for the movies, and its still continues with the now drug addiction.

Yeah, they are both on hot streaks right now. Plus both are Boston bred and Micky is an icon over there.

They already did a Tyson one in 1995; I would hope they'd be a little more ambitious with a big-budget movie biography, but the Ali movie was underwhelming, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I wouldn't bet his title would be the climax of the movie. Likely, the Gatti trilogy that actually ended his career would be dramatic enough - it would even reinforce the tough-guy story rather than making it like an underdog-winning-the-big-game forumula...
