In boxing, itīs not always the fight that is the biggest challenge. Just ask Alexander Povetkin. The former world amateur and European champion, who also finished first at the 2004 Olympics, has had a hard time finding opponents. After ten wins in as many pro fights (8 KOs), nobody wants to cross his path any more. Former world title challengers Danny Williams and Monte Barrett refused to get in the same ring with him. "Itīs been increasingly difficult to find opponents for Alexander," said Sauerland matchmaker Hagen Doering. "We have checked with so many heavyweights but nobody seems to be interested. It looks as if the name Povetkin is already feared around the world." [details]

Wow, talk about hyping a fighter up! From what I've seen of Povetkin, he's seems like a decent heavy with good size, punching power, and a brawling style. However, like boxing2005 has said, he lacks defense and that could get him in trouble against an experienced boxer with good skills.Comment

Yeah, that is my analysis too. Povetkin has a bad case of puncher's syndrome and its going to give him some serious problems when he takes a step up to better opposition. Obviously he isn't getting the right training, but even if he did I suspect he isn't listening to his trainers. His future in the division will most likely depend on how well he can take a punch. If he can walk through everything like Valuev, then maybe he will have a chance.Comment

Povetkin has only ten professional fights under his belt, so I think its a little premature to be fighting opponents like Barrett...I think right now he should be fighting the Marcus Rhodes, Ross Purritys, and Kevin Mcbrides of the boxing world. No need to step up too fast and risk getting KO'ed.Comment
