Exactly...Vitali walked away from the sport and he never won the title PROPER in the ring anyway. **** him! Peter should fight and beat Maskaev and if Vitali earns a shot at the title, he should defend against him.

That's why people make appointments at the DMV, which Vitali did by accepting WBC's champion emeritus title.

Perhaps Peter is just trying to up the step aside fee....

And by the way, screw Klitscho...what did he ever do except lose to Lennox Lewis?
And now he decides to come back just because an easy mark has the title?
        Step back in line,fool!!!!

Here is the bottom line...they are paying Peter couple million to step aside. This would probably mean that Vitali beats Maskaev, and Vitali becomes the champion and faces Peter. This means that it is a 70 to 30 split. If Peter does no step aside, he faces Maskaev, good chance that he wins, earns 1.5 million. He is now a champion. He gets 70% of the purse bid. Considering that Byrd-W. Klitshcko purse was $18million, and this is V. Klitschko's return to Germany, or USA, whichever, it should bring in at least $20mil. This means that if Peter takes the 2 mil to step aside, he is losing up to $8mil (70-30=40
          .40 * 20mil = 8 mil) if Vitali beats Maskaev.

Has anyone even contemplated the fact that maskaev might beat peter?

                Exactly my sentiment.

**** if there's anything on this, It looks like Peter is afraid he'll lose to Vitali.

If he fights Vitali as the champ they can include a rematch clause in the contract, if he fights Vitali as a challenger they cannot do that.

I don't think Vitali will go for the 30% of the purse, which would lead to the purse bid and a 50/50 split, if WBC makes it a mandatory fight. It's all irrelevant though because if Peter becomes champion, he will never fight Vitali, that's just real.

BUT if the WBC mandates it.. he wont have much a choice.. I mean I know King has power.. But the WBC has to save face in this..

Unlikely. His chin will not hold up, and he does not have the skill, the jab nor the agility to keep Peter off of him like Wladimir does. Looks doubtful, but who knows.
