Putting the Boxing vs other arts to rest .. First and foremost I feel that boxers and martial artist should end the petty bickering and show respect for teir fellow fighters .UFC and other MMA promotions are not going to steal fans of boxing and vise versa. Boxing has a hardcore base of very comitted and loyal fans as does MMA. There are those who enjoy both as myself but i for one would never give up watching boxing for MMA. I would like nothing for then to see joint promotion where both MMA and boxing take place and maybe even a few boxer vs martial artist dream matches. Dana White VS Don King anyone ? With that said I will try to answer a few questions which are often posted .
STREET FIGHTER The danger of a street fighter is that he has no set moves . He may come in looking like a wrestler or boxer but then fight like something unexpected. This is also a weakness as the street fighter because he has no set moves he is unclear of his next move . Trained fighters of both martial arts and boxing often know what they are going to do from one move to the next. A boxer knows that he throws a hook off of a jab or a million other combos. The martial artist has that plus a grapple or kick. The street fighter just goes with no direction he looks for one thing that works and uses it. If it does not work he has no back up plan. There is always the chance that the street fighter is a gifted natural athlete and fighter but at most times this is not going to be the case .
WRESTLER A wrestler is always a wrestler meaning that you aways know that he will be looking for the take down . A wrestler has no element of surprise yet is trained to be quick and effective at what he does. There is the chance that a quick boxer such as Roy Jones can catch the wrestler shooting in but wrestlers are trained to keep their chins and heads tucked. This will lessen the power and effect of the boxers punch and the boxer may hurt his own hands by hitting the thick cranium. A pure true wrestler only knows to takedown, roll, hold, and pin his oponent. There for there is no fear of submition from a wrestler. A wrestlers best bet is to ground and pound but a trained boxer is able to take a great deal of punishment wile still fighting back.As always it depends on the two men fighting and what unknown skills are possessed by each man.KICKBOXER Why wouldn't a kick boxer beat a western boxer ? Given that both men are of equal boxing skills and with the kick boxer having the avantage of kicks I see no reason for him not to be capable of victory. Let me put it this way, Would Mike Tyson be able to beat a Mike Tyson who has the same level of boxing skill and same power be able to beat that same Mike Tyson but with the ability to throw a kick with the same skill of his punch ? I don't think so .JUJITSU As seen with Royce Gracie you do not need to be big or strong to submit much larger men . The muscle may be strong but the bone is weak. Jujitsu has many ways to force a takedown and end the fight with submition. Once the boxer is on the ground he will be nearly helpless. It will be natural for him to try to punch his way up . But by punching he will only open himself up for arm submitions. If your arm is broken you can no longer punch. The jujitsu fighter may not even take the chance of being hit on the ground and take the leg instead . If your leg is broke you can't box .There is also always the choke , He might just take the back and use a rear choke to end the boxer . Again it all depends on the two men there is always a chance that the boxer lands a knockout blow before any of this can take place .
JEET KUNE DO /CONCEPTS This is the avanced art of Bruce Lee and is taken from what he said and made into what he ment. JKD is a open art meaning that it teaches you what will work in a fight but it also gives you the freedom to use what ever works best for you. Bruce Lee was a fan of Ali,Dempsey as well as Joe Louis formatted his movments and punching so that it would mimic theirs. Bruce Lee thought that a martial artist must train as he would fight . This means that in order to become a fighter you must, well fight. Lee believed in hard sparring and working the bags there for he often trained just as a boxer would . Not only this but he also used only what was effective and eliminated that which was used for show and is not necessary. Bruse Lee was gifted in many forms of martial arts and worked hard to learn every form he could as do his successors.Sadly we will never know just how good he was as a true fighter and it is unfair to judge him as such .As in any dream fight we only have our own speculation to base the winner upon.In todays world JKD is the basis of what MMA is today and can not be truly decided by just one man vs another because of the unknown parts of the equation. No two JKD practitioners nor two MMA fighters nessisarly fight alike .In conclusion there is no truth to either sides claim that one will always beat the other . If you take your biggest vs their smallest you are giving your side an unfair advantage. If you take your most skilled vs their least skilled you again giving yourself an unfair advantage. There is no answer to the question untill MMA and pro boxing join forces we will never know . For every boxing gym story I hear I have heard ten dojo stories that follow the same path . Yet people often make the mistake of thinking that every other person of of a form is limited to only the skills of some one they have seen who uses that same form. We are individuals, we are not set to only maintain the information held by the next man . But we also set forth to seek out new information and skills individually. Who's to say that a boxer can wrestle if needed and who can say that the wrestler can't box? Classification of the sort will only withhold new knowledge which can and will make you a greater fighter .
