I like Dan, I think he generally has his finger on the pulse of the sport and breaks some good stories, but this ESPN Insider thing is KILLING me.
First, they made his P4P rankings Insider. No big deal, I can live without them (who doesn't have a P4P list these days).
Then of course his chat transcripts became insider, so if you missed the live chat on espn.com (usually Fridays at 1 PM CST), then you don't get to see what he had to say about what's going on or if he snuck in any rumors or tidbits (which he likes to do).
Last week or the week before he started blogging semi-regularly (twice or so a week, I suppose), but that too is Insider. Again, that makes me upset but I will reluctantly live with it. He loves teasing this stuff that we have to go pay for, and it drives me nuts.
Now, his latest divisional rankings are out and they, too, are Insider now! Incredible! So, what, does ESPN believe that the few boxing fans that visit their site (instead of the boxing specialty sites) want to read Rafael's work are all going to plunk down the 7-10 bucks a month for Insider priviledges (or whatever it costs)? Who wouldn't rather sign up to one of the premium boxing websites for less than Insider to get all kinds of boxing goodness? ESPN needs a clue. It's funny, too, because maxboxing.com is a corporate partner of ESPN (they even link there!).
I used to be an Insider, but with a family (wife, 4 children), it's not feasible to spend money of some blogs and rankings, when loads of that kind of stuff can be found for free elsewhere.
It's just frustrating. I guess access to live chats will soon be Insider as well...
