Barrera Eyes Farewell Fight September 15 In Las Vegas

BARRERA EYES FAREWELL FIGHT SEPTEMBER 15 IN LAS VEGAS

WBC Super Featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico has declared from its camp in Big Bear, California, that everything indicates that next September could be his goodbye to boxing, the Mexican website Esto Linea reported.

The future hall of famer, who takes on challenger and compatriot Juan Manuel Marquez on March 17 in Las Vagas, said that after that fight he will take about three months vacation and then return to the gym to fight in September.

"I think there will be no problem if I request Oscar (De La Hoya) to reserve for me the September 15 date, an ideal date for me to fight in Las Vegas, and then hang up the gloves," Barrera said.

"I have already had September fights in the United States and it had gone on me very well. That month pleases me to say goodbye to boxing, since my decision was to make two defenses this year and then hang up the gloves," Barrera added.

The boxing world earlier missed a blockbuster rematch between Barrera and Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao when Pacquiao was caught by a promotional tussle between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank after Pacquiao signed contracts with both promotional outfits.

It remains to be seen if Barrera's last fight would be against Pacquiao. Arum earler announced that the cancelled April 28 fight between Pacquiao and Korean In Jin Chi in Macau will push thru in October.

The Pacquiao-Barrera rematch is one of the most anticipated fights in boxing since the then upstart Pacquiao administered a total beatdown on Barrera on November, 2003 in San Antonio, Texas. Barrera would later say that he was caught unprepared for the fight because of various distractions. With Barrera's imminent retirement this year and Pacquiao's different direction, the chances of the rematch being made appears to become dimmer by the day.

No matter who he fights, I'm seriously going to miss Marco Antonio Barrera. Love him or hate him, whether you're a diehard Morales fan and you spit on the ground he walks on or not. The man gave his life to boxing and gave everything he had in that damn ring. And he's already left us with many entertaining fights.

As a fan of boxing, it really sucks to see some of your favorites go. Sometimes you'd give almost anything just to see them peak in one more fight...

For the record, I felt the very same way about Erik Morales when he lost to Pacquiao(even though I'm a big Pacquiao fan) in their last fight and still do. I've always loved and respected both Barrera and Morales, I guess that makes me kind of an oddity. Everybody I've ever conversed with usually loves one and hates the other, it's kinda ****ed up.

They both lived and (almost) died for the sport.

i've been a fan of barerra's since he was a prospect on his way up in the early 90's, but i think his fight with JMM should be his last, he's been in too many hard fights and taken a lot of punishment at the hands of manny, junior jones, and erik morales. all those ring wars make fighters get old fast

I don't think there's anything humiliating about losing to Manny Pacquiao, regardless of who you are...

its a smart retirement, but i question if he will be able to keep away if he wins both fights.

Exactly. They were just on opposite paths. I really hope that one day they can make amends and realize how much of a significant impact their rivalry had on boxing, and how much joy it brought to the fans. I think they're very much like Ali and Frazier were back in the day, and I sincerely hope one day they can put all that **** behind them.

It's moments like that (like when Ali and Frazier made up) that the boxing fans never forget. At least I know I never will.
