Depends on what kind of weight-lifting you are talking about. The greatest fighters are not bodybuilders or powerlifters. Since most power is dependent on speed, timing, and leverage, all that time wasted lifting weights is time when a person could be learning to fight.....

In each sport it is very important to mimic and practice the motions of the sport to get better at it. Swimmers swim. Baseball players take practice swings often. Boxers shadowbox and spar and hit the bag.

Lifting a piece of metal is not as useful as these other things. The key is to stick with sport-specific motions.

does lifting weights play a signifigant role in slowing down a fighter? what are its main disadvantages? because i started boxing recently, AND i go to the gym and lift weights regularly now, as i am trying to build alot of muscle mass...so am i defeating the purpose of trying to become a solid boxer or what?
yes you are, light weights are okay, . but being muscle bound will never help you in boxing

                Proof in the pudding:

                Early Jeff Lacy... Explosive.
Late Jeff Lacy... Slow, one punch at a time.

Why do you think he struggled against Vanderpool and what not before the Calzaghe disaster?

[QUOTE=squealpiggy;2088226]Hatton weight trains. His training is done three times a week after training and takes about 20 minutes. He does one day of front, one of back and one getting the spots he missed on the first two days. QUOTE]

oh yes and hattons been so successful of late hasnt he?
