Whatever McClellan did in his life away from the ring stopped a long time ago and he's probably had lot's of feelings about his own behaviour in the years since, as most people do about bad behaviour in their youth. Unfortunately for him especially he probably can't think with the same clarity and is limited in how much he can do to right his wrongs.

I think G-man should be remembered as a great talent and a ferocious puncher whose injury should remind us all of the dangers of boxing and the importance of proper institutions to protect fighters inside and outside of the ring.

As for the stuff about protecting Benn and "this wouldn't have happened in the US" - I know a lot of you guys on this site are v young, but c'mon, grow up.

I had never heard of McClellan before he fought Benn (i was just getting into boxing back then), yet id heard of Roy Jones, maybe even Julian Jackson.

I believe he is overrated by some not just because he is disabled now, but because his career was cut so short. Imagine if Tyson had retired or stopped fighting after demolishing Berbick? Alot more people would believe he was the greatest fighter ever.

Also, his fights arent easy to come by, i think wen people start to watch his fights and look at his record they are shocked at how much of a devastating fighter he really was. He isnt just the guy Benn put into a coma, he was a great fighter in his own right.

He is overrated. Personally, Benn exposed how crap his defence was. And how he tried too hard for the early KO, rushing and spoiling his own work

BUT i dont think its people confusing sympathy with respect. The truth is he had the potential to become a truly great great champion. Maybe an all time great. He had the talent to wipe out the super middleweight division. KO Jones, beat Collins and Eubank, maybe beat Calzaghe. Not sure if he would have, but he could have.

McClellan was held off Benn twice in the first. Apart from that he had another 9 rounds to KO Benn, and he COULDNT. The ref isnt to blame for McClellans non-existant defence. Or Benns will to win.
Benn won that fight, McClellan did not lose it, and the ref is hardly to blame.

Roy wouldnt leave the states because he was scared of being robbed on points. NOT because he believed all british refs save their own fighters from getting KO'd.

Any fighter who has the balls to step into the ring in the first place deserves respect IMO. The Gerald McClellan debate has been raised quite a few times on this forum, and although he was supposedly a nasty character outside the ring, i'm more interested in his achievements inside the ring, and anyone who doesn't credit McClellan as a very talented fighter knows nothing about him IMO. I agree that there is focus on McClellan due to his injuries, but on the whole i think McClellan is rated exactly as he should be, again, as a very talented fighter.

His fights with Jackson alone are very impressive, and worthy of a whole lotta respect for him as a fighter.

Benn deserves immense credit for winning the fight with McClellan. No-one gave hime a chance, and rightly so, because McClellan was explosive. However, although i wouldn't say that the referee (Alfred Asaro) was the reason that Benn won the fight, i would say that he was extremely inept, and was over fussy, especially after Benn was dropped in the first round.
There is a rota-like system for referees, and it just so happened that Asaro was to be referee for Benn - McClellan due to this, but IMO, such a high profile fight should be taken on by a tried and trusted referee, and not some Frenchman who couldn't speak a word of english, and who was amateur at best! That said, i take nothing away from Benn, he was outstanding.
