Former champion approved for title shot against Maskaev!
    By Matt Richardson

********* has confirmed that former WBC champion Vitali Klitschko will emerge from retirement for a tentative April bout against WBC champion Oleg Maskaev. Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs) abruptly retired in the fall of 2005 after suffering a knee injury which forced a third delay with then-interim champion Hasim Rahman. Klitschko will make an official announcement of his comeback at a press conference in Germany this Thursday.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While nothing is signed, negotiations between the two camps are continuing and look promising. Maskaev and his team had originally been in negotiations for a unification bout against Vitali’s younger brother, IBF champion Wladimir. Wladimir suddenly decided to fulfill his mandatory defense against Ray Austin on March 10. Maskaev (34-5, 27 KOs) also had a mandatory defense of his own due against WBC #1 ranked Samuel Peter.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the rules of the WBC, Klitschko is allowed a title opportunity due to his status as a former champion. WBC Rule 1.21 concerning championship defense obligations outlines that a champion must defend their title “either in a voluntary or mandatory defense” against a variety of potential opponents, which includes “former or retired world champion (upon majority vote of the Board of Governors)." ********* has learned that the WBC Board of Governors has approved a title shot for Klitschko against Maskaev.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
While the “Nigerian Nightmare” - who paid for two sanctioning fees for WBC eliminators in his bouts against James Toney - will undoubtedly be displeased by the actions of the WBC, there is no legal action the fighter or his promoter can take as the WBC rules allow this situation. Due to this rule, Peter will not receive any “step aside” compensation although the WBC will most likely mandate that the winner of Maskaev-Klitschko face him next.
    Great Stuff!!!!

    LOVE IT!

I've never posted before, and I've been here for awhile. I do have to say I'm extremely happy to hear this news. I do also think it is awesome that Don King is being pushed out of the way, while two brothers try to accomplish the goal of being Heavyweight Champions at the same time. Something that has never been done before. I would also have to say, if both brothers win their fights, we can then begin to hope that the power the heavyweight promotors has changed.

If he comes back as good as he left, none of these current heavyweights will beat him. It's not just as easy as coming back and starting where he left-off though.

There wasn't anything that could get rusty on Vitali except his actual hinges. He's the kind of guy who can just stand up and fight for the heavyweight title dude.....look how he fights. There's nothing pretty about it, he exploits his size to the max and doesn't care about being aesthetically pleasing...and doesn't really care about his defense outside of backwards head movement.

This is the best news I've heard all year! Vitali will win over Maskaev and then will beat Peter's ass. I can't wait to see this ****. There is only one problem - they are talking about his fight to take place in Moscow, which means we won't even see it on TV again.

Don King always said that Klitschko brothers should play chess instead of boxing. Well, this is a perfect move by them to stop King from controlling the HW division. Poor Peter, he got cought up in a chess game and he is nothing but a pawn on King's board.

WOW that is awsome, Vitali is the man so great to hear he's coming back. Now only if we could get Lewis to come back and put these two phenoms in a rematch. However this might mean that Wlad won't be able to unify the belts, If Vitali beats Maskaev. The Klits said they agreed never to fight eachother...

This fight should take place in Moscow. Big fights should be all over the world (Manilla, Zaire, etc.) not just in Vegas. Wlad-Valuev will be a huge fight and could take place in either Vegas or St. Petersburg.

I'm sure HBO would get in the mix of any such fights. Maskaev-Okhello was not a draw; Maskaev-Klitschko is.
