    What makes a legend?

Ali, Marciano, Dempsey, Chavez, all legends.
But what made them legends and how can today's fighters become legends?

about ten years...It's time, check out how everyone's questioning nard, dlh, rjj, but 10years after they retire, it's mostly respect cuz people would only remember the fighter's accomplishments and not their latest failures.

I think what makes a legend a legend is,

consistency in great performances against great fighters over a good amount of years. Dominance, and memorable fights that undoubtedly show off your greatness. Enjoyable style to watch. And of course longevity.

So for example u could be champ for over a decade fighting no-names in the sport and beating washed up overweight ex-champs but that wont make u a legend especially if your style doesnt produce any excitement.

          Time and degree of Accomplishment.

I mean, Henry Armstrong.....Held 3 titles in 3 weight divisions simultaneously.

Sugar Ray Robinson defeated more fighters that are considered "GREAT" than other fighter that ever lived.

Archie Moore scored more KOs than anybody.....AND at a time when the light heavyweight division was LOADED with talent there was only one man he could not defeat.

Defeating some of the greatest heavyweights to ever live kind of helped too...

Like previously stated, being an all-time great fighter is a mixture of level of opposition, longevity, and level of performance. However, to truly be a legend, a sports icon, one has to transcend the sport itself, which is quite rare.

There isn't really a formula into being a legend. It just happens. I suppose it has something to do with accomplishments, demeanor, historical context, timing, and probably a little bit of luck.

To make a legend you need a champion. For a champion you need a fighter. and for a fighter you need someone who can win. And for somone to win they need to be fast, strong and skilled. Legends arent born overnight, it takes years and years, and a legend becomes a legend 5-10years after their career has ended. But in my honest opinion, to my eyes a legend not only someone that wins all the time, but someone who has had ups and downs in their career. For ex. (proobably the most common example) Muhammad Ali- He was a great fighter, but at the peak of his career he had convereted to Islam. This portrayed Ali as a bad man atc atc. and not many were supporting his actions. But he fought against these odds and still went on to fight and be champ. Now that in my eyes is a legend. Someone who can win AND lose without makin a big scene. Its not always about winning.
