HBO copy protect

Can anybody give me info on the copy protect HBO uses in relation to DVD recording ? I have never run into this using vcr. I just got a DVD recorder and have noticed I cant convert Tivo/VHS HBO fights post 2004 to DVD due to copy protection. Do they only do this on replays or live broadcast as well ? Thanks for any info you all can give me.

I didn't know u could do that with Tivo.
