I actually think it was the Frazier fights and the Holmes bout that did the most damage. Ali was almost helpless in his fight with Holmes, he was old and supposedly had his stamina sapped from some pills he took to help him loose weight faster. After the Frazier fights he seemed more spent then he did against Foreman, especially in "The Thrilla".

george chuvalo did some damage to ali's body. chuvalo couldn't hit ali in the face so he pounded the body for 15 rounds. i've heard ali also has kidney problems to this day. i think also frazier, because they fought so many times and frazier threw a lot of punches

It was all of the fights, particulary from the first Frazier fight on. But just as bad were the thousands of rounds sparred where he allowed his sparring partners to beat up on him to toughen him up. Imagine big powerful men like Al "Blue" Lewis hitting him as hard as he could, all in some dingy gym, for no money and for nothing more than maybe Ali's pride, to prove he was still tough at his age. The sparring hurt him just as much as the pro fights. Maybe more.

Yeah, but they were still landing and landing really damn frequently.

If I had to pick any one fight, I'll go with Frazier III. Ali was exhausted, probably dehydrated, and those are the worst situations to be having your brain rattled around in. He was also getting hit by Joe Frazier.

But Holmes, Foreman, Shavers, Chuvalo, Norton, Bonavena, Wepner (rabbit punches take their toll) and every other guy who roughed Ali up definitely had a hand in it. Ali took a lot of punishment in many of the fights he won.

Certianly Frazier. Three grueling fights with a very hard hitter. He only fought Foreman once.
